Shyann is a neo soul singer/songwriter from Toronto. Her upcoming debut album ‘INTO THE GROUND’ showcases a dark jazz-influenced sound that has been described as “Trip Pop”, combining her raw vocals with the musical stylings of producer Nick Name. Her musical influences stem from artists ranging from Amel Larrieux and Portishead to Outkast, Beck and Timbaland.
Shyann grew up in a diverse musical environment, where she was trained operatically at the tender age of 11. She studied under the Calbes Voice Studio, where Eleanor Calbes took Shyann on personally due to the promise she saw in the young singer. Eventually her interests expanded to jazz and soul music, and she has been songwriting and performing for many years. Recently she placed into the top finalists of the Canadian Radio Star National Songwriting Competition with the song ‘Green Mellotron’ – featured on her upcoming album. The song placed third for ‘Most Views’ and sixth place for ‘Song Favourites’ out of hundreds of submissions. In addition to her songwriting successes, the ‘making-of’ short film for her upcoming album “INTO THE GROUND” was selected to be screened in both the 2012 Mississauga Independent Film Festival and the 2012 Hamilton Film Festival – an excellent way to make an entrance on the Canadian music scene.
Shyann has developed a very unique sound, which she greatly attributes to collaborating with producer Nick Name, whose ‘outside-of-the-box’ production & exceptional ear for music has lent itself tremendously to this project. Nick Name is an accomplished producer, multi-instrumentalist & engineer. He has a list of production credits ranging from feature films (“Six Reasons Why”, starring Colm Feore) to Canadian Idol R&B sensation Gary Beals’ chart topping “I’ve Changed.” He was also a key member of Club Treehouse, a pop super-group with a cult-following in Canada.
Together, Shyann & Nick Name combine elements of jazz, soul & trip hop in their sound. Their album, ‘INTO THE GROUND’ is scheduled for a January 2013 release and also features guest appearances from Canadian trumpeter, Brownman Ali (Guru, Mos Def), and emcee Telescope, among others. Shyann’s versatility, raw vocals and coy-yet-confident stage presence are a potent mix that is set to take the Canadian – and International – music world by storm.
