Son Of Sea

Biography

The phrase one man band generally conjures mental images of street performers of dubious lucidity, toting some sort of home-made stringed instrument and clashing cymbals between the knees. In the case of singer/songwriter Martin MacDonald it simply means having a slightly overburdened hat stand.

An album-in-a-month challenge in 2008 marked Son of Sea's beginning, absorbing Martin's previous solo/band effort The Westminsters. The result of that challenge, although its existence is now officially denied, bore a small amount of fruit that was placed aside for the next project...

The Dreaded Green bag began as an excuse to scratch the movie-making itch, but far from providing relief the itch grew and grew into its present form -- a five-track EP of carefully tangled indie/folk/pop, each with an accompanying video. Mostly filmed in timeless Super 8, The Dreaded Green Bag has had a long and weary journey from page to film to the studio and finally to its digital resting place on the world wide web.

Martin relocated from the humid subtropical city of Brisbane Australia to the metropolis that is London UK in 2011 taking Son of Sea with him. The first few months were well spent completing the Dreaded Green Bag, including a small amount of last minute filming, adding to the already roving nature of the project.

The Dreaded Green Bag
2011
Five lush, hand crafted tracks from this globally scattered outfit, blending elements of Neil Young's songwriting, the mild twang of The Byrds, the intention of Elliott Smith, and just a whiff of The Shins' slightly unusual lyrical icing.

A Man With No Tea In Him
2010
Japanese proverb says, a man with no tea in him is incapable of understanding truth and beauty. This song isn't about tea - that would be a distinctly dull subject, wouldn't it?
