Spirit of Newfoundland

As the group's name suggests, Spirit of Newfoundland is made up of professionally trained vocalists who flaunt their Newfoundland heritage by singing passionate, vibrant and harmony-filled Newfoundland songs. The group has been performing for twelve years, delighting Queens, Prime Ministers, Presidents and tens of thousands of loyal fans. Their musical style spans the broad Gulf between Celtic and Broadway - from exciting come-all-ye songs to hauntingly gorgeous ballads. The company is primarily involved in dinner and show productions, having established itself successfully in St. John's and toured across Newfoundland and Canada to enthusiastic audiences. The name of the company embraces its objective: the development of productions that celebrate and enhance the rich spirit, culture and talent of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Spirit of Newfoundland Productions has produced 48 stage shows of which 28 are original. The shows had been performed at the company's former theatres -- Theatre At St. John's Lane, 223 Duckworth Street and Majestic Theatre, 390 Duckworth Street. Now the company is located in their new home, the historic Masonic Temple, 6 Cathedral Street. The total number of shows performed has now surpassed 2000. The group has toured across Canada, performed on several national television broadcasts and has two CDs "Even Seagulls Dream" & "I'll Be There for Christmas". Spirit of Newfoundland has received many awards including the 2002 Cultural Tourism Award for Newfoundland and Labrador, the 1999 City of St. John's Event of the Year Award, The 1999 Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador Ambassadors Award and the 1998 Tyrone Guthrie Award from the Stratford Festival.

Owned by Peter Halley (President and Artistic Director) of St. John's and Kathie Hicks (Chief Operating Officer) of Corner Brook, Spirit of Newfoundland Productions was formed in January 1997. The company's owners bring solid backgrounds in the performing arts and business. Peter Halley has extensive experience in public performance, musical theatre and event coordination and brings a public relations degree to the partnership. Kathie Hicks has been a radio and television journalist for twelve years and has an extensive background in accounting and business, including a successful career as financial controller of major events such as 'World Cup of Skiing 1982/84' and other public events of international stature. She was also named to Premier Danny Williams Business Advisory Board in 2006. Her combination of business and performance experience in Spirit of Newfoundland Productions has been the foundation upon which the success of the last few years has been built. Spirit of Newfoundland also owns Spirit of Newfoundland Catering and Newfoundland Kitchen Party Foods which produces the Jiggs Dinner Square. The company employs 100-plus people. Half of that number includes actors and singers. The remaining half includes administrative, kitchen and service personnel.
