Guitarist, composer, arranger, Steve Brown, is a recently retired professor of music and director of the jazz studies program at Ithaca College. He has four recordings available under his own leadership; Good Lines and Child's Play, both on Cafe records, and Night Waves and Crossroads on his own Brown Cats Productions. He is also coauthor with Ray Brown of an instructional text and recording, An Introduction to Jazz Improvisation. He has recorded with Chuck Israels' National Jazz Ensemble, Ray Brown's Great Big Band, Chuck Mangione, and the California based; Full, Faith, & Credit Big Band. His writing projects have included commissioned works for the Airmen of Note, featuring the Hal Galper Trio; the Ithaca Ageless Jazz Band; the Celebration of The Arts Jazz Festival (COTA Cats), featuring himself and Phil Woods; and a piece for the Harvard University Band. Other releases as a guitarist/arranger under the leadership of Steve Gilmore include: I'm All Smiles, Silhouette, The Jazz Dancer and The Bass Player, and Reflections In The Night on Jazz Mania (featuring Bill Charlap). He has also recorded four compact discs under the leadership of drummer Danny D'Imperio, Blues For Philly Joe, Hip To It, and Glass Enclosure on V.S.O.P., and The Outlaw on The Sackville label. Brown is active as a performer/clinician both in the United States and Europe, and has performed with Chuck Israels, Billy Hart, Bobby Watson, Bill Goodwin, Jimmy Smith, Steve Gilmore, Barry Harris, Gerry Niewood and many others. He has performed at major jazz festivals including The Newport Jazz Festival, The Berks Jazz Festival, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and the Imaxina Sons festival in Spain. His most recent CDs include Convergence with the Chuck Israels Trio on Philology and Its About Time with Bob Keller and Steve La Spina on the Brown Cats Productions label. Other recent CD projects include: Share My Life by The Miles Brown Trio, (Miles Brown. Steve Brown, and Rich Thompson) on the Brown Cats Productions label; Atlantic Bridge with musicians from Spain and the United States, (Walter White, Alberto Conde, Kin Garcia, Roberto Somoza, Miguel Cabana and Steve Brown) on the Karonte label from Madrid, Spain and Jorge Cuevas and The Caribe Jazz Allstars. Also just released is the latest Brown Cats Productions CD, Kayak, by the Ray Brown Great Big Band. Three more recent releases include Alcohol and Booze, two CDs by Danny D’Imperio and The Bloviators on the VSOP label for which Steve did much of the arranging, and It’s Nice To Be WithYou by the Chuck Israels Trio released on Stunt Records from Copenhagen, Denmark and featuring Thomas Clausen on piano. Steve is a Professor Emeritus from Ithaca College.
