Touted as San Diego's #1 Reggae Band, and winning the Best World Music category at the San Diego Music Awards in 2009, STRANGER is an up-and-coming force, not only with its multifaceted audio recordings, but also because of the band's stellar and amazingly versatile live performances that have constantly thrilled fans in both the US and abroad. Based out of the south bay of San Diego, neighboring the highest crossed border in the world, STRANGER is turning heads through multicultural and musical diversity with a soulful blend of reggae roots, rock and jazz combined with conscious lyrics and unparalleled musicianship.
On the heels of their Hawaiian and Guamanian radio successes with the songs "Like a Dream" and "The Only One", the band has embarked on several tours and expanded its fan base in both areas and on the mainland US through touring and festival appearances focused in the western states. As their new ep "Above It All" is on the verge of launch, STRANGER is primed to uplift and entertain the world in extensive touring, documentary films, music videos, and upcoming new music recordings.
In addition to the eclectic mix of music and styles present in the recordings, seeing the band live is what really sets them apart from other groups in their genre and in Southern California in general, blending a fusion of influences and a mind-blowing talent for switching between styles and songs.
The name says it all: STRANGER does not fit into a mold. Even from the inception of the group, its diverse mixture of influences set the band apart from the other acts in the reggae genre and led to the band’s mysterious, yet creatively appropriate name. From the beginning STRANGER was outside the box. The band formed at Southwestern Community College in Chula Vista as a nameless four-piece act consisting of guitar, hand drums, vocals and bass. After only a few short months the boys recorded their first demo consisting of 10 original songs including favorites "Woodlands", "Hometown" and "My Life", which appeared on the "STRANGER EP" in 2004 and are still heavily requested at the group's hometown shows. Over the next 4 years the band recorded two full-length albums, “Life Lessons” and Shelter from the Storm” while continuing to built their fan base to point of starting to fill large San Diego venues. This is when the STRANGER started to really make an impact on the Hawaiian Islands with radio and fan favorite "Like a Dream"
It was in 2006 that the band’s lineup was completed, adding the horn section from the “Shelter from the Storm” album recordings to the group’s live performances and song-writing, ushering in a new sound and creative input that led to major successes, not only in San Diego, but throughout the west coast, in the Hawaiian Islands and Guam, especially with the radio success of "The Only One". This sound is present on the band’s next two albums “Some Kinda Sign EP” and the full-length album “World Underground.” The soulful vocals and conscious lyrics of David Ornelas, hip-hop and punk rock bass influences of Arthur Tilley, ripping blues and rock guitar style of Daniel Montgomery, virtuosic hard-hitting drumming of Nolan Clark, and Jazz & Ska horn background of Don Carter and Aaron Hudson are what make STRANGER the dynamic and eclectic group that is making waves on the reggae scene in the US and abroad.
