Since its foundation in 2005 Studio Dan, an ensemble lead by Daniel Riegler, has caused an uproar in the Austrian music scene. Especially their unusual linkage of New Music and Contemporary Jazz captivate their audience. At the same time Studio Dan doesn't stay on a superficial level of simply mixing styles but in fact strives to grasp the essence of different musical approaches in order to come to new refreshing results.
The name goes back to an album called "Studio Tan" by Frank Zappa (1979) which, as a representative of his complete works established a significant initial point for this project. The colourful instrumentation as well as the improvisational strengths of the musicians make many experiments between Cage´ish timecode-compositions, and unorthodox grooves á la Fred Frith possible. The ensemble consists of the most innovative young players of the Austrian jazz- and improvisers scene on one side and specialists for New Music on the other side. Facts that guarantee the best requirements for the production of the most actual contemporary music. In 2008 the collective is invited to act as the stage band of Vienna´s most renown jazz club "Porgy & Bess". In September 2009 their CD „Creatures & other stuff" will be presented.
