Biographical Info: BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION OF
Susan Burkhalter was born and grew up in the Washington, DC area. She is a 1970 graduate of the College of Wooster, with a Bachelor of Music in piano, organ minor. She also studied for two years as an undergraduate at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She was a piano teacher for 30 years until 2008. She began piano studies at age 7, continuing through high school. She studied with Daniel Winter at college and as an adult for 13 years with Robert Dumm, a former professor at Catholic University who also wrote columns for Clavier Magazine and Keyboard Classics.
She has been Associate Organist at 1st Church of Christ, Scientist in Mt. Vernon, Virginia since 2006. Her organ teachers since 1973 included Ronald Stalford, Dale Krider, with whom she currently studies; Charles Callahan, and Kenneth Lowenberg (organ, improvisation, and composition). She passed the Colleague exam of the American Guild of Organists in 2003. She is married to Curtis Shively and they have two adult children, a daughter and a son.
