The Black Honkeys

The Black Honkeys, formed in 2001 by Tampa Bay music scene veterans Bro Phil Esposito, Joe Joe , Sanders, Wil "The Thrill" Harris and a series of drummers, with the intention of writing and playing music that was influenced by the Motown R&B sound of the 60's and 70's. Our influences were everything from Sly and the Family Stone, Temptations, Rick James, Rolling Stones, J. Geils, etc. Also, when listening to the band, you could here the influences of such contemporary artists as Lenny Kravitz, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Black Crows. Not long after our first year of gigging, we added permanent drummer Steven C. Tanner and keyboardist Tommy Thompson. Cutting our teeth and finding our footing in the Tampa Bay scene playing juke joints, dive bars, and any other place that would have us, our following began to grow. With this line up, the band released the first CD, "Thank You Kindly". Shortly after our CD release Joe Joe Sanders left the band and long time friend and guitarist Greg "Zink" Czinke joined the band. With the core members all being in the band for over 8 years, and being fortunate enough to have some of Tampa's finest horn players come and go, we really started having some success. No longer playing just the lower level bars anymore, we were starting to play some of the nicest venues in the state. After 10 years in the Band our legendary keyboardist Mr Tommy Thompson passed away at the ripe 'ol age of 71 years old and left us with enough influence and Soul Power to continue, we pressed on. Leading us to our current line up of world class players that have become a family devoted to entertaining our fans and pushing the band to the highest of heights. Our current line up features Bro Phil Esposito Lead-Vocals, Wil "The Thrill" Harris-Bass Guitar, Steven C. Tanner-Drums, Greg Czinke-Guitars, female vocalist Nicole Simone Colyfield, the World Class Horn Section featuring Terry Clark-Trumpet and Scott Meyers -Trombone, John Dash Dixon-Keyboards and Billy Summer Rhythm guitar. In 2012, the band just released it's second CD "Live at the State Theatre" and is currently touring the Eastern U.S. With hopes of doing some touring in Europe next summer. Because everyone in the world should have access to the good time!
