The Derek Banach Quintet

A Colorado native, Derek Banach has performed trumpet in a variety of settings from jazz to hip-hop, salsa, reggae, and even in orchestral settings. In 2009, Derek set out to compile his favorite original compositions which still needed an outlet. At the suggestion of pianist Justin Adams, a full-length CD was soon underway. "Tugende"(which means "let's go" in Uganda) is a collection of this original material. Each tune has a background story - which of course is listed out in the liner notes.. In a modern jazz vibe, the group is made up of some of the top players in the Denver area: Keith Oxman - tenor sax, Justin Adams - piano, Bijoux Barbosa - bass, and Jeremy Jones - drums. Tom Ball joins the group on trombone on a few tracks as well. The focus of each composition is to stray from "traditional" jazz harmonic movement and still retain a strong sense of swing in a hard-bop style. A few compositions venture into odd-time signatures, but offer the soloists ample footing to create freely. Also reccommended is the album "Northstation" in which Derek collaborates with studio wizzard Jeremiah Moore in an electronic exploration of beats, ambient textures and live instruments.
