Rick and Maureen Haworth ( pronounced Hay-worth) are a husband and wife, singer/songwriting duo from Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada. They have been making music together since they met at the First Baptist Church in Nanaimo, BC.
Playing music brought them together, and has been a constant thread throughout their lives. Their music has evolved through the years, encompassing many genres, and their latest album, We're Gonna Raise the Roof is their new collection of country/southern gospel songs.
Rick was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, into a very musical family. He was the middle child, with two sisters, who grew up listening to and singing gospel music. From the early age of five, he began singing gospel music in church, along with his older sister and dad, who played the piano. Rick was too young to read, so his mom taught him the melodies and lyrics. Later his younger sister joined them and they all sang at many church functions, touring all around the Medicine Hat area.
The family moved to Nanaimo, BC, and it didn't take long before those beautiful family harmonies were a favourite at The First Baptist Church they attended. They sang at many other Christian functions, continuing to tour, where they met such gospel greats as The Blackwoods and The Couriers. Rick has been playing in bands from the age of 13 and still continues with his love of music - writing, arranging, singing, and playing a variety of instruments, including guitar, bass, and keyboards.
Maureen was born in Nanaimo, BC, one of four children. She attended The First Baptist Church, and it was there that she first met Rick and his family. She was a member of the church choir and a girls group where Rick's mom was a leader, so she knew the family well. After taking piano lessons for several years, Maureen decided to teach herself guitar, playing and singing songs at home; only once in a while venturing out to perform at church.
Just after graduating from high school, she and Rick attended a church youth group retreat, where they brought their guitars along for accompaniment. Three months later they were picking out wedding rings. A couple of years later they married, all the while playing music together. Maureen's passion is singing and playing and has added songwriting to her skills in the past few years. They have been blessed with children and grandchildren that they love and enjoy.
Their love of music continued throughout their marriage and soon after their move to Grand Forks, they played in a weekend country/oldies band, Phase Four, with Rick on guitar and Maureen on bass. Both did vocals, along with a drummer, and for a decade, a pedal steel player. After many years the group disbanded.
Throughout the years, the Haworths have been influenced by a variety of artists, such as The Eagles, The Carpenters, Gold City, The Gatlin Brothers, Gordon Lightfoot, The Couriers, along with many country artists, and smooth jazz greats like Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra.
In 2010 they met producer/artist/songwriter Ron Mahonin ( of You Came Into My Life, A Hit Song, Goodnight L.A. fame). After hearing their complete repertoire of original songs, Ron encouraged them to record their first album of light contemporary/easy listening songs, Reflections.
Ron also introduced them to Kelowna's Dave Favell, who put three of the Haworths' gospel songs on his new gospel compilation on the North Country Records label, released in 2012.
Rick and Maureen continued to write and record, and recently completed their first gospel album, which is already receiving world-wide airplay and garnering top spots on international charts.
This new album, We're Gonna Raise the Roof is a collection of original country/southern Gospel songs, that combines The Haworths' rich brand of harmonies and unique style into a blend of songs written and sung from the heart - each with it's own special message. Their vocals are beautifully complimented by the superb talents of veteran pedal steel player Ollie Strong, lead/rhythm guitarist Dave Favell, and producer/engineer and friend, Ron Mahonin. They are very excited about sharing this latest album, performing, ministering with music at churches and special events.
Along with performing, Rick and Maureen continue to write and record, working towards their next gospel album. They are so grateful for the many blessings God has given to them in their lives, for bringing them together and for their musical abilities. They truly hope that people are moved by the songs that the Lord has given to them.
