The Live Debate! writes original stories in music. Some of the stories are about time, and how brief things seem when they're excellent, and how long things take when they suck. Some of the stories are about the vastness of space and the statistical surety that life exists in numerous forms among far-flung stars. Some of the stories are about the more earthly experience of being alive, finding love, overcoming fear, and experiencing delight. All of the stories are personal and unique, all designed to carry your imagination away.
The music is bombastic, joyous, fun, emotive, commanding, and colorful, always building or receding: an art experience for your ears and imagination. Anthony D'Amato sings with the timeless grace of classic Motown, Soul, Broadway and Pop in his voice. Jody Miller holds down the low end with beefy bass riffs and slender harmonics. Matthew Muñiz plays keys and serves as violin-wrangler and lead arranger. Darius Peterson keeps the whole thing ticking on the drums, with beats both mighty and subtle.
The Live Debate!'s self-titled, debut album is released this April 2013, an independently-produced, out-of-pocket, passion experience of 11 original songs, with the grace of nearly 20 musicians including Jonah David (Matisyahu's Roots Tonic, "Live at Stubbs") on drums. The band is joined in self-production by Anthony Berg (Twista, Syleena Johnson, etc). Not only will the band be building their presence at home in Chicago, but also in front-man Anthony D'Amato's old stomping grounds where, before a Craigslist gone-right meet-up and subsequent relocation, he was awarded a 2010 Asbury Park Music Award for Top Vocalist and continues to be a large contributor to their closeknit, thriving scene. The album was released first with four celebratory East Coast shows (NYC, Philadelphia, Saugerties, NY, and a sold-out show in Asbury Park, NJ).
What does the music sound like? In Anthony's voice you'll hear shades of Joe Cocker, Freddie Mercury, and Jeff Buckley. In the songs themselves, you'll hear the influence of composer-songwriters like Tori Amos, Björk, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens.
It's songwriting as you've never really heard it, performed by musicians of great skilland remarkable heart. The Live Debate! is a band asking the question of our time: what great new stories can we tell when we come together?
