The Modern Electric are a Cleveland-based four piece with a passion for their city and an unapologetic enthusiasm for pop music. Equal parts dark and orchestral as it is warm and melodic, they have coined the term “cinematic pop” to define their sound. Considered to be the aural counterpart to 8mm film, cinematic pop is organic, soulful, and saturated in emotion. Their debut album is a soundtrack to real-life heartache, but has the passion to fit any silver screen love story such as Garden State or The Graduate. Influences include Arcade Fire, Clem Snide, T. Rex, and David Bowie—the latter having been immortalized in the band’s unforgettable homage, “David Bowie (Save Us All).”
Years of heart-felt, energetic performances have helped The Modern Electric to amass a devoted following. Citizendick.org, an independent blog focusing on the Midwest music scene, describes the group as “savvy indie-rock veterans, dropping hooks and energy left and right.” The Modern Electric have performed at Cleveland’s Tower City Ampitheater, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Summer Concert Series, The Burning River Fest, The Ingenuity Fest, The Brite Winter Fest, Indiana’s Jurassic Pop Fest, and The House of Blues with national acts like Fitz and the Tantrums, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Rogue Wave, The Elected, and Sloan.
Their 2009 self-titled release was written, recorded, and produced entirely by the band. It was voted Best Album of 2011 in the Cleveland Scene Magazine and received 10/10 stars on Citizendick.org who declared the album “beautiful, cinematic and forceful”; the songwriting “earnest as hell... raw, and emotive.” Sixtysecondsofheaven.com labeled the songs “arresting, tension-filled pop symphonies.” The album is currently available on Itunes, Rhapsody, Amazon.com, Cdbaby.com, and Disgstation.com. A preview of the album is also accessible at www.myspace.com/themodernelectric.
Presently the group is producing a documentary, in collaboration with director John Heberle, about the recording of their self-titled debut. They are also writing material for a sophomore release. Still in the early stages of their career, The Modern Electric plan to leave an undeniable mark on pop culture history through the power of music, film, and art.
We are from Cleveland Ohio, a city wrought with negative connotation. The mere mention of our town brings about scoffing! Eyes role in contempt! It seems that a cultural black cloud has hung over Cleveland for decades; held in place by the cynicism of the music industry and the lack of faith shown by artistic leaders. This stigma has given birth to a regional Dark Age. Any signs of light remain as "well-kept secrets", or are outsourced to the cities of societal favor: L.A., New York- bloated monotonous machines of industry whose glories fade as steel surely turns to rust. We, THE MODERN ELECTRIC, proclaim the coming of a Renaissance to Cleveland! The Dark Ages will be transformed by public reinvestment into Art! Beauty! Local music! Local galleries! Filled with Local artists! Local Boutiques! Local Ideas! Local blood pumping and rejuvenating the heart of Cleveland culture and expression! We shall be the desired destination! We shall be the Scene to which artistic nomads wander! They shall set their sails towards The Great Lake on which our empire stands! Hail Cleveland!
