Ever heard bouzouki and cello together? How about a sweeping melodic line in a Moorish-influenced instrumental or an epic cello solo in a Roots-infused song? Well-crafted and distinct in the fusing of musical styles, Stuart and David from The Moor Rose create something special when they play…
Formed in 2011, The Moor Rose features the evocative, melodic tunes of talented, self-taught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Stuart Haines, accompanied by the powerful, moving tones of classically-trained cellist and bass player David Rose. Together they play a diverse mix of Acoustic Folk, Roots, Jazz and World Music, with beautiful songs and sensational instrumentation.
Stuart is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bouzouki, flute, percussion), songwriter and vocalist. Being a self-taught musician (“unclassically untrained”, he muses), his intuitive & improvisational style creates uniquely soulful music & powerful music for the soul. Whether performing as a solo artist, in the duo The Moor Rose, or as a session musician, he is acclaimed for the warmth and richness of his music.
As a journeyman through all different genres of music (Indie Rock in the early 90s, Folk/Roots in the late 90s, Jazz & World Music in the 00s), Stuart now finds joy in blending musical styles & genres, developing fusions that cross between East & West; influenced by Celtic, Indian, Arabic, Spanish & African traditions. He brings a diverse & dynamic palate of sounds to his performances.
In 2009, Stuart joined with the dancers from Body Temple Dance Studios, to form Ekata Fusion Arts, composing original music for the sold out season of Adelaide Fringe 2010 shows, Ekata: Music, Voice, Dance – ‘a hypnotic journey of song and dance’ (Rip It Up Magazine). He continues to work with Ekata Fusion Arts, the Tribal Bellydance duo Zali, and also works regularly with the stunning vocalist and musician Heather Frahn, as part of The Harmonic Project.
Some of Stuart’s performance highlights include:
•Garden Of Unearthly Delights, Adelaide Fringe 2011
•The Harmonic Project, with Heather Frahn, performances in 2010 & 2011
•Adelaide Fringe 2010, Ekata: Music, Voice, Dance (sell out shows!)
•Namaste Festival, Singing Gallery, McLaren Vale 2010
•Tour Down Under, McLaren Vale 2009 & 2010
•WOMADelaide 2007, with South African performer, Nigel “Snow Cloud” Martin
A classically-trained cellist and bass player, recognisable for his unruly hair, David has a passion for music and a repertoire spanning over three decades of eclectic performances.
From hauntingly beautiful improvisations to session work with established artists, David’s incredible “feel” for the groove takes the listener on a journey of discovery. Festival appearances, such as the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Adelaide Fringe and the Bangalow Fatherhood Festival, continue to provide an outlet for David’s musical exploration, along with the opportunity to support musicians such as Tex Perkins, Jeff Lang and Damien Leith.
David’s diverse career has seen him craft musical soundscapes for cross medium art productions through Country Arts South Australia, work collaboratively with visual artists, such as Sean O’Shea from Byron Bay, and perform in countless bands and orchestras across many genres. Utilising his energy and ability to play beautiful cello music, and to express his spirit through this awesome instrument, David continues to inspire and entertain whenever he plays.
