The Relentless Mules

The Relentless Mules are four of the drivin'est young acoustic musicians you'll find in central Ohio. The Mules ‘ dobro, mandolin, guitar, and bass anchor the sweet three-part singing of the band’s energetic and heartfelt vocalists. This banjo-less bluegrass draws generously from the classic songbooks of Flatt and Scruggs, The Osbourne Brothers, Bill Monroe, Reno and Smiley, among others. Their presentation of these songs is at once true to form and a contemporary expression by these emerging artists. The instrumental strength of each individual is the foundation of this band’s powerful momentum. The blistering resonator guitar work of Stephen Moller is fast gaining recognition in the Midwest and Appalachian Mountain region. His presentation at fiddlers’ conventions, festivals, and in clubs has shown him to possess a fresh, dynamic voice capable both of subtle coloration and bold declaration. Daniel Phelps’ mastery of the bluegrass guitar idiom stems from his true blue Kentucky upbringing. Raised playing music with his grandfather, father and brother, Daniel is a wellspring of traditional and modern guitar sounds. Whether backing a vocalist or playing an instrumental number, he displays the full range of his guitar at each showing. There are many fine mandolin players in bluegrass music, but few can match the imagination and emotional intelligence of Caleb Powers. His strong, creative mandolin playing is one of the Mules’ greatest assets. The breadth of his ideas extends beyond genre lines, bringing rich melodic and harmonic concepts to bear in the Relentless Mules brand of Bluegrass music. The keystone of the Mules’ push is string bassist Chris Stevens. The Mules may sing a sweet and lonesome love song or play a burning dance tune, and Chris Stevens will be right at the center of it.
