The Sexican plays mariachi inspired gipsy rock with a twist of protest punk. They are known for their energy on stage, that in more than one case have induced a spontaneous chain dance among the audience.
Mike H – the bands’ primary songwiter says about the bands inspiration, that it’s everything from Cuban folk to Hungarian polka, and that any element and genre is used, when it seems to underline the message of the songs.
The lyrics are sharp and often with critical views on modern society and the lack of international community, while there’s still room for celebration and the ‘joie de vivre’- joy of life.
The latter is especially noticeable at their explosive live-shows. Therefore it is not a coincidence that ‘energy’ is the word repeated through every single review the band has gotten in its merely three years of existence.
Founded in 2006 by guitarist/singer Mike H, bassist Søren 'Gimmster' and Jeppe Halkier during a musicians summer camp led by New York songwriter/producer Neill C. Furio who inspired to write protest songs. As a result of the unusual songwriter session a trio formed to perform the songs written by Mike H and Lasse Fisker, who quickly joined as a percussionist, as the group saw potential in the new style of writing protest songs with a rare twist of mariachi, gipsy and klezmer feel to it - and writing in different languages. And so the band was formed with this lineup including Alex Olesen on guitar for two upcoming live events. Especially the second event, playing a minor stage at Hede Rytmer Festival in Silkeborg, made the band realize that there was more to follow and that the project had to continue. With the main stage manager begging the band to stop after playing five extras as the main attraction, a major name act, were loosing audience in a swift tempo. Word spread so quickly that the tent was packed with people, and many more enduring the rain trying to get in, and who wanted a lot more than the mere six songs the band had produced in its short existence.
Since that magic evening, The Sexican have been playing a great deal, ascending in status and acclaim among reviewers and spectators as a live attraction sought after by any fan or critic. To widen the horizon they invited in Michael Grankvist to play both trumpet and accordion as part of the studio and live lineup. They recorded their first release, an EP titled 'The Sexican', in 2007, releasing it in 2008 as a consolation for the many that were waiting for a debut full length album.
The studio recordings continued throughout 2009 resulting in the production of a full scale 12" LP vinyl record with gatefold cover - including a CD with an extra two bonus tracks - enriched with illustrations and artwork. This extended LP/CD version will release in March 2010 and will be available in select record stores in various countries along with sale through common online distribution including iTunes and MTV Online.
