Soul Movers : "Old School Soul with a Modern Punch"
In 2007 Lizzie Mack teamed up with guitarist/songwriter Deniz Tek to pursue a lifelong love of Soul music. Together, they formed the Soul Movers ... playing a unique blend of 60's Beat and Memphis R&B styled Soul.
Lizzie's lifelong journey in music started when she sung and recorded in a number of different venues culminating in a solo at the Sydney Opera House. In recent years, she sang a sultry Jazz set around the traps in Sydney in bands including The Flaming Stars, and in Paris with rock group Les Indiens. Inspired by artists such as Etta James and Julie London, Lizzie has enthralled fans with her riveting stage presence and seductive voice. With the current album, her first experience with songwriting felt to her as natural as diving into a wave on a hot day.
Deniz's long and hard rocking background with Radio Birdman is well known. His parallel solo career extends across dozens of albums and tours, spanning genres from hard rock (Deniz Tek Group) to old school punk (Last of the Bad Men) to the outer limits of experimental noise (Glass Insects). In recent years he has also shared the stage with Scott Morgan, soul shouter from Detroit's Rationals. Together they performed numbers like Otis Redding's "Respect" and Johnnie Taylor's "Hijackin' Love" to crazed audiences across the USA. Leaving aside extended solos or punk riffing, The Soul Movers features the raw soul side of Deniz' playing.
The Soul Movers first single, out now exclusively on picture sleeve 7 inch vinyl (Munster Records), features a respectful full-power cover of Aretha Franklin’s ‘Baby I Love You' and the original soul-deep gospel-inspired ballad ‘Piece O Me’.
Encouraged by finding the sound they were looking for in their single, further recording sessions shook the walls at Hothouse Studios, Melbourne, in Feb 09 resulting in an album: 'On The IN Side' (pending release 1/9/09 on Cool Time Records). The Memphis-style rhythm section featured Craig Harnath, veteran producer and bass player; and drummer Brett Wolfenden (Rushcutter), whose powerhouse playing and attitude more than did justice to the killer sound of his 60's vintage Ludwig kit. The finishing touches were applied by Radio Birdman veteran Pip Hoyle on keyboards, and Sydney scene jazz veteran Frank Bennett on blasting tenor saxophone.
