Maureen Andary & Sara Curtin met in their DC church choir at the tender ages of 11 and 13, singing together every week until Maureen left for college in New York City and Sara made her way to Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Maureen, a songwriter and ukulele instructor back in Washington, was tapped as a finalist for the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest in July 2008. She wondered and wondered, "Who could possibly sing those high harmonies in my songs?" A lightbulb went off in her head when she remembered the long lost Sara Curtin, also a songwriter and ukulele player now living in Brooklyn, NY.
The two teamed up for the live competition in West virginia and the experience was righteously awesome and proved to Sara & Maureen that they belong on a musical path together. And thus was born The Sweater Set - a duo that will melt your heart. Today, The Sweater Set continues to play up and down the beautiful East Coast and proudly announces the release of their anticipated debut album "Surprise Visit". It was recorded (mostly live), mixed, and mastered by Jason Chmiola of Blue House Productions. Intricate Soprano harmonies soar over multi-instrumental arrangements of ukulele, guitar, flute, hand percussion, and the occasional kazoo/glockenspiel solo. Listeners are invited into The Sweater Set’s joyful friendship as their songs play out like musically elaborate gossip about (what else?) the perils of courtship, lust, and heartbreak. “The Sweater Set sound is like nothing any of my friends are doing,” says Rose Polenzani, Boston’s Empress of Folk and producer of Sub-Rosa, a popular series at Lizard Lounge in Cambridge. “They’re completely unique.”
With only 9 months as an official band, The Sweater Set has enjoyed a precocious beginning, performing in selective East Coast venues and festivals including Bryant Park’s After Work Series in Manhattan, Campfire Festival at Boston’s renowned Club Passim, and the Shakespeare Theatre’s Harman Center for the Arts. With features in The Washington Post Express and having ignited buzz in the blog world, The Sweater Set is quickly gathering steam as they gear up for an exciting Fall 2009.
