Thin Air Jazz

Phil Allen, valve trombonist/composer/arranger, is originally from Indianapolis, IN. While growing up he studied trumpet and arranging with Jim Edison; piano and improvisation with Steve Allee, improvisation and jazz theory with Alan Kiger and composition and arranging with Alan Foust. In the mid 70's and early 80's he played with and wrote for the Von Ohlen/Allee Big Band in Indianapolis as well as his own groups. In 1996 Phil moved to the San Francisco area and within 2 years was playing with and writing for the College of San Mateo Monday Night Band. That association led to performing and writing for the Collective West Jazz Orchestra led by Fil Lorenz. Phil wrote and coproduced "DownBeat 9:30" in 2000 with the Collective West. In 2008 Phil and his wife Barbara moved to Colorado Springs, CO and in 2009 he started Thin Air Jazz which was based on the Collective West. Thin Air played it's first concert in February of 2010 at the Ancient Mariner in Manitou Springs, CO and has been performing at least once a month since then. In 2011 and 2012 Thin Air did concerts with trumpeter Bobby Shew in which Phil wrote special arrangements for Bobby on some of his original compositions; a project that continues on into 2013. Phil has several original compositions that are published by Walrus Publishing, each of which had their origins in Thin Air and can be heard on Sneakin' up on Spring. Along with Thin Air, Phil has been performing with other groups around the southern Colorado area, most notably The Needlewood Orchestra led by guitarist/composer Tom Taylor.
