How do you do? -
We are this fair city:
Jason Charles Franklin - vocals, guitar
Brandi "Charlotte" Grahek - viola, vocals
Alex Deupree - bass, vocals
Robin Marshall - drums, cello
Classical shakes hands with Rock and Roll. and they seem to get along all right. How you ask?
Well, it's kind of like a little sugar in your coffee...bitter and strong, with a bit of sweetness added. It began with a bunch of drunk guys in a basement, drinking pabst and jamming their dreams away in a cold dark rehearsal space. And then the strings came into the picture and things got serious.
Charlotte plays strings and sings here and there and loves classical music, but she wanted to combine it with rock, because she wanted to do something a little different. Jason wanted to do something different too, so his love for off timing rhythms and wide ranged vocals became a part of the group. And then there was the ever quiet Robin, with his massive drumming, who wanted more strings! And so the cello came to be too. To complete the bitter sweet band of musicians is Alex, who mixes his mad math bass rhythms with some singing as well.
We can't base our autobiographical sketch on influences. We can base it on this: uniqueness. We bring our differences to the forefront and somehow make them work in a way that defines a unity both dark and richly breathtaking.
"It is almost like a euphoric drug spills from the speakers when you pop in Broken Surfaces. Visions of pirate ships and wintry battlefields appear with drums crashing as soldiers of normalcy fall." Ron Trembath, Fense Post
