The Band
Thijs van Leer is best known as the creative
force behind the 70’s group Focus, a Dutch
progressive rock band and Billy Graham
favorite. Performing at such legendary venues
as the Fillmore, Focus burst onto the U.S.
scene with their 1973 hit “Hocus Pocus,” which
reached #9 on the US charts. Their follow up
hit, “Sylvia,” also received great acclaim in
the U.S. and worldwide. Last fall, Thijs was
knighted by the Dutch queen receiving the title
of “Ridder in de orde van Oranje Nassau” -
meaning “knight” of Oranje Nassau, for special
service as a musical ambassador for the
Netherlands. He plays fl ute and many different
types of organ, but also sings, yodels, and
whistles, skills in evidence both with Focus
and the Thomas Blug Band. He received a degree
for fl ute from Geneva Conservatoire and
also studied piano, orchestration and organ.
As well as continuing his leading role in Focus
and maintaining a solo performance schedule,
Thijs has been a key member of the Thomas
