Timothy A. Helisek earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Composition from California State University Northridge in 2008. He studied classical and jazz guitar at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota where he obtained an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Guitar Performance in 2004. Timothy also studied piano performance extensively at Normandale Community College and has performed works by composers such as Chopin, Bach and Debussy in recital.
Timothy won both the 2004 and 2005 edition of the Normandale Composer's Competition for his classical chamber music Beauty in Sadness and Dancing Towards the Sun. Dancing Towards the Sun also placed in the Minnesota Music Educators Association Competition in 2005. In 2011, his composition for piano and tape, Animating Existence, was released on CD and as a digital download in iTunes and other online retailers.
Timothy has had the opportunity to be involved in the film music world as well. He was assistant to composer Garry Schyman on the award-winning video game BioShock in 2007 and also orchestrator for the game Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon. In 2008, he began to work as assistant to composer William Goldstein and continues to help Mr. Goldstein with various tasks around his studio.
Timothy resides in Los Angeles where his focus is on writing contemporary classical music. He remains busy working on a new avant-garde CD and a follow-up to his educational guitar book ‘Reading Studies for the Beginning Guitarist.’ He is a music instructor at Vibe Performing Arts Studios where he teaches a wide range of instruments including guitar, piano, ukulele, bass guitar and composition.
