Timothy Costa was born in July of 1968 in Carmel, California, and currently lives on the Central Coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles. He began to play on anything that made sound from the moment he was born. His first real teacher was Renaldo Jackson, one of the unknown "Motown sound" conga players. He continued studying with Renaldo for over ten years, playing countless gigs and experiencing his first studio recordings.
Timothy's studies have taken him to Cuba, studying at the national Havana School of Music. He has also taken several trips to Guinea, West Africa, to study with living legend Mamady Keita. During one trip to Guinea, Timothy became involved in working with refugee children from Sierra Leonne.
Later, while working as a social worker and doing music on the side, Pato Banton gave Timothy his first opportunity to tour full time. This led to the additional opportunity of touring with the Wailers. As well as being a percussionist for the Wailers, Timothy was also the personal assistant for Aston "Family Man" Barett.
