Tobbi and Tommi are more than two sisters that can sing. Together they exemplify the power of unity in sisterhood and from that unity the glory of God is unleashed through the ministry of song.
Born and raised in East St. Louis, Illinois, both Tobbi and Tommi were integral parts of the music ministry at their grandfather’s church. Stemming from a generation of Christian leaders both sisters were vividly aware of the importance of a strong Christian faith. Tobbi and Tommi grew up singing but the gift of singing was cultivated and nurtured in the church. Both Tobbi and Tommi played the piano and drums and even began some songwriting in their pre-teens. Although the sisters share a five year age difference both can recall at the tender age of twelve a personal experience with Jesus that shaped a personal relationship with Him that has ultimately continued to manifest into their adult lives.
Tobbi and Tommi cannot recall a time in which they were never singing gospel. Their heart has always been to gospel music. Tobbi and Tommi believe that gospel music is God’s holy word through song. Upon that revelation it was no coincidence that Tobbi and Tommi have been in many community choirs across the nation. It was in ministering in community choirs that they both developed spiritual character and boldness in Christ. Formerly known as T&T and The White sisters, both ladies agreed that simply Tobbi and Tommi is a sheer reflection of their unity and sisterhood.
Tobbi and Tommi experienced a breakthrough in the gospel musical arena when friend Dwayne Woods introduced them to Donald Lawrence. As a result of that meeting Donald Lawrence has served as the sister’s mentor for over six years. Tobbi and Tommi say that Mr. Donald Lawrence is not only a musical genius but has helped them grow tremendously and has been a great teacher to them. Ernestine White, Tobbi and Tommi’s mother, has also served as the duo’s musical mentor.
They have shared the stage with Chaka Kahn, Patti Labelle, Mary Mary, Vanessa Bell-Armstrong, Hezekiah Walker, Donnie McClurkin, Jason Crabb, Ricky Dillard, Kim Burrell, Beverly Crawford, Pastor Shirley Caesar and many others. Tobbi and Tommi have sung on the Grammy Awards (2005), BET’s 106 & Gospel (2009), Stellar Awards (2006, 2008, 2010), Dove Awards (2010), TBN (2010) and other major television networks.
Through all of their success the sisters are deeply rooted in their family’s love and each other’s support. “We are creating a legacy that reflects a life that is pleasing to God because to God be all the glory, it is always all about Him. Tobbi and Tommi step aside when the presence of God is evoked.”
The sisters are a testament to women worldwide that by being true to yourself and standing on God’s word, you will never have to compromise your gift or anointing because God’s honors His word, even though the fires of life.
