Powerful, and raw…a rhythmic hybrid that lies somewhere between rock and folk; It’s the feeling that matters, and that’s what draws you in.
The music of Tom Van Ruiten is real and relevant. Of love and pain, hope and fear, skepticism and optimism, these are songs from the heart that speak truth about the world of an average guy…filled with hope for the future, but challenged by the reality and gravity of the struggles we face.
With a unique vocal character and inflection that carries a message, whether powerful or soft - like a preacher from a pulpit or a whisper in your ear - Van Ruiten has the ability to communicate through music. If you believe music is best when it has depth, you’ll appreciate the breadth of topic and tone that resonates from the music of Tom Van Ruiten.
“Writing songs gives me a voice in a world in which I really feel pretty powerless,” says Van Ruiten. “I worry about the problems I see –but I find strength and hope in love, whether from my wife, friends, family, or God …this interaction of fear and hope drives my songwriting.”
Van Ruiten’s music is great live. There’s a unique quality in his demeanor and tone that shines through when you watch him play. You can feel the sincerity in his words and the passion in his rhythms as he strums out a tune. There is raw emotion in these songs. Having received the Best Performance award from West Coast Songwriters (July, 2011), Van Ruiten has been acknowledged as a true and honest songwriter and performer.
The live acoustic EP, RAW (just like me), released 1.23.13, captures the sincerity of Van Ruiten’s alternative folk music. Recorded in one shot, the 6 song set captures the session in its purest form (RAW). No frills, no backup…just hard-driving, rhythmic, acoustic music with meaning and purpose.

Artist Background: “I never thought I would end up singing and writing songs. As a kid, I was forced to take classical piano lessons…I absolutely hated it. I was listening to Metallica and being forced to play Mozart. For my 8th grade graduation, I was given my first guitar, and I fiddled around with it and the piano for the next 15 years, but maybe like an hour a month tops. For some reason in my thirties I really got into my guitar, and once I started to sing and play at the same time I was hooked and started playing a lot. That evolved into songwriting…which is really my favorite part of music now.”
