Hailing from the Greater Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio area, Ulmer / McFarland and American Honey is a band composed of some of the regions finest professional musicians who have long wanted to work together. This first album will be the first of many from these talented performers and long time friends.
Dean Ulmer: A multi-instrumentalist and long time behind the scenes member of the Cincinnati music scene known for his producing prowess, Dean has stepped out from behind the recording console again to flex his artistic muscles for his 3rd album release. Teamed with Amy & American Honey, Dean explores his varied musical influences (echoes of Lennon & McCartney, to driving straight ahead blues, to modern country) to create a musical journey that employs soulful, insightful, to biting and some sly suggestive lyrics that we can all identify with. Dean works with WNKU’s Mary Peale (ex. of WEBN & WOFX), assisting with her weekly show for 10+ years, and is in Tex Schramm’s Radio King Cowboys.
Amy McFarland, Vocals: Amy may very well become Cincinnati’s biggest musical discovery in a very long time soon. Singing professionally for only a little more than a decade, Amy has an EXTREMELY powerful voice and can cover just about any style that’s thrown her way with great skill and a deep passion. Her spot on the original music scene here in Cincinnati has been growing steadily more bright, not only does she take center stage for Ulmer & McFarland, she is also the new lead singer for The Blues Merchants and handled the vocals on their new album earlier this year.
Greg Schramm, Drums: Greg has been a long time Cincinnati music staple over the last three and a half decades. Greg has been a member of Magnolia Mountain, The Star Devils, The Mad Hornets, and now fronts his own band “Tex Schramm and Radio King Cowboys” which took home top honors in 2011 for City Beat’s best country band category. Greg & Dean have been friends for nearly 40 years and have collaborated on many different musical endeavors and adventures over those years.
James “Izzy” Isbell, Bass: The funky-fingered fella' who goes by the name of “Izzy” Isbell has been playing bass professionally since 1995 in projects and bands from Alabama to Ohio (Including the popular party band After Midnight). Izzy brings his unique style of low-end madness and his ability to embrace the myriad of stylistic nuances and genres that Ulmer/McFarland's and American Honey has and is (in his own words) “proud to be a part of great musical endeavors such as this one!”.
Jim Gaines, Pedal Steel: Jim is quite simply, a pedal steel monster, and is highly in demand throughout the region. Jim has played recording session from Nashville to Cincinnati and cut his studio chops with Shad O’Shay at Fraternity and Counterpart Records and is now with Half-Baked Records. Jim plays in several original area bands as well. Besides American Honey, he is also a member of Tex Schramm and Radio King Cowboys and Suits that Rock.
Ira Stanley, Lead & Slide Guitar Legend: Ira has played lead and slide guitar with several bands over the last 40 years including his main recording band, Dixie Peach. Dixie Peach's first album was released in 1975. Since that time, Ira has backed up or shared the stage with Joe Walsh, Dickey Betts, Roy Buchanan, Lee Roy Parnell, and many others. Ira’s newest Dixie Peach album is scheduled for release in January 2013.
David Rhodes Brown, Lap Steel: David has played in seemingly every important band that’s been in Cincinnati in the last 40 years. Besides playing in American Honey and Tex Schramm and Radio King Cowboys with both Dean and Greg, David is a member of 500 Miles to Memphis, The Browngrass Troupe, and god knows who else …
Ricky Nye, Keyboards: Another Cincinnati musical god, Ricky offered to sit in on three tracks and who could say no? Ricky is known far and wide, including in Europe, for his Boogie Woogie playing and can always be counted on to bring some tasty chops to a session. Like David, Ricky has played in too many bands to all list.
Greg Renzenbrink, Bass: Greg has been playing bass professional, both electric and stand up, for nearly 40 years. Besides being an outstanding singer and song writer on his own, Greg is one of the best “in the pocket” bass players in Cincinnati, Greg is yet another musician who has played in too many bands to list and is current helming the standup bass for Tex Schramm and Radio King Cowboys.
Willy Denison, Bass: Willy came in and laid down some nice tracks for us when ol’ Izzy got himself a bad case of the flu and the session was already booked so Amy and I thank him. Willy has played bass for on the world wide stage with Delany & Bonnie, and was with Sonny Moorman for many years.
