Uncles is an indie-folk band from Queens, NY. At its heart lies a songwriting collaboration between Dan Bateman and Will Schwartz, two childhood friends who grew up together in Westchester, NY. Tom White (Little Anchor) plays upright bass, and Graham Watson (Human) plays drums.
Schwartz and Bateman both had unique introductions into music. As a child, Danny would go down to his family's acreage outside of Birmingham, where his Alabaman grandfather sang folk songs to him as a child (which is why he has a southern accent that is only present when he sings). He would come back to Westchester to teach the songs to Schwartz, and by middle-school and early high-school, they started finding band members among regulars at the open-mic clubs in Manhattan.
They played together through their college years, each developing their own unique and eclectic lyrical and compositional voices, drawing on influences like classic 90's indie rock by Pavement, Guided By Voices, and The Pixies, and C&W singers like Hank Williams, George Jones, and Townes Van Zandt.
Since then, Uncles has toured regionally and developed into a stronger, more cohesive quartet, developing from what was once a lyrical project, into a vibrant, buoyant musical collaboration.
