Wendy Hymes & Darryl Hollister

Wendy Hymes is known to exert definitive interpretations of standard repertoire from the Baroque era to modern composers. She sets the pace in intercultural music, especially non-European composers from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, having been a featured soloist at the Compositions in Africa & the Diaspora symposia and the Festival of African & African American Music., now Intercultural Music Initiative Festival.

Dr. Hymes has performed with St. Louis Philharmonic, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Union Avenue Opera, and has collaborated with numerous chamber groups with violinist Rachel Barton Pine, harpists Amy Camie and Elisabeth Chardonnet, and the late organist Dr. Lucius Weathersby, with whom she collaborated on the album, Spiritual Fantasy (Albany Records).

Her doctoral dissertation entitled African Art Music for Flute: Selected Works by African Composers provided the initial inspiration for her debut CD, and was also published in the Winter 2008 issue of the Flutist Quarterly (a journal of the National Flute Association). Her work as the program director of the Intercultural Music Initiative Chamber Players is a continuation of her efforts to give voice to flute repertoire by diverse composers from other parts of the world. See www.imusici.net for more information.

Dr. Hymes holds BA, MM and DMA degrees in music from Principia College, Indiana University and Louisiana State University, respectively. Her principal flute teachers are Marie Jureit-Beamish, Jacques Zoon and Katherine Kemler.
