When it comes to public opinion, bias and exaggeration is inescapable. When a fan tells you their show was “Out of this world” and that they had “The most fun ever” partying with the band after the gig, they might be prejudice. How about this recent facebook fan page post that demanded, the new YOUTHINASIA album needs to come out now because the listener had “Worn out the last record”. When Corus radio DJ/Goldfinger drummer Darrin Pfieffer, declares YOUTHINASIA, “The world’s greatest punk band” on Edge102.1, you know he’s saying it because of his friendship with the band. Right?
Personal opinion aside what it really comes down to, and I quote, “Those who like it, like it a lot”. YOUTHINASIA’s real strength lies in their ability to forge intimate connections with people, easily lifting individuals from a pool of casual listenership to that of devote fan.
Could it be that each member has distinct personal qualities, as seen in their wildly hilarious Webisodes? Possibly an adventurous 10 year back-story littered with fan interaction at shows across country, playing stages at top venues and festivals like the Van’s Warped Tour, Wakestock and Scenefest? Or is it great writing? Their songs tap into every day noteworthy issues that tell stories, raise awareness, provide thoughtful commentary and above all entertain and inspire.
Consider the real life story behind the “The Deadline”. It relates to anyone that has, or has loved someone that has faced cancer. It was actually written in the studio hours before it was recorded when the band received a devastating phone call, informing them a close friend had just passed, after a long dehumanizing battle with throat cancer. Contrast this with the triumph of “FREE” which in ambiguous terms is a celebration of western rights and a standard of life we enjoy but rarely contemplate. Toss in songs about a john falling in love with a prostitute, a woman’s escape from an abusive relationship, or “Jimmy Beaner”, a 1999 Columbine shooting inspired account of a teen, that falls into a world of violence and gunplay.
For whatever reason, it’s apparent that it’s something deeply personal to each. So download a track, catch a live show, or fire a message to Jarvis, Trev, Banger, Brandon, or Rad and see what they’re all about.
