Yemi Marie: Teen Singer With a Passion and on A Mission

She has released her first album, opened for Chaka Khan, performed at the Trayvon Martin rally and been featured in the media numerous times, but these accomplishments simply have fanned the fire in Chicago teen singer Yemi Marie. The 16-year-old artist with a golden voice continues to demonstrate she has the talent, charisma and determination to conquer the world of entertainment – and win the hearts and souls of music lovers.

In early 2013, the 16-year-old made her debut with the CD 12/11/12, which was inspired by her goal of finishing her first album at the age of 15. The disc, which boasts a blend of mature vocalized R&B along with a youthful, upbeat hip-hop-infused style, has launched Yemi Marie into the hearts of music lovers of all ages while setting her apart from her teen peers.

Over the summer, the dynamic teen has been busy performing at numerous festivals and venues across Chicagoland and in neighboring states. She recently opened for the legendary Chaka Khan at Wolf Lake Pavilion in Indiana, while also performing before 6,500 at the Trayvon Martin Rally in downtown Chicago and headlining her own “Yemi Marie & Friends” concert at the DuSable Museum. She wowed audiences at the Taste of WVON Festival, A Safe Haven’s 5K Walk-Run in Douglas Park, WGCI’s 2013 Car & Bike Show, and during half-time at a Chicago Sky game at Allstate Arena.

Yemi Marie’s newly released video, “Saturday,” is getting rave reviews for its rhythmic, bouncy, energetic feel. On her first music video and single, “Draw the Line,” Yemi draws it down by offering a unique perspective of a strong independent young woman who sets herself apart by encouraging young listeners to make positive decisions. On “Old Fashioned Love,” she offers a lyrical ballad that shares the endearing magic of a special relationship. “Sunny Day” is a fresh, throbbing beat with an uplifting lyrical melody. Yemi Marie’s music is not solely an urban sound, but a blend of rhythmic soul melded from various genres of musical influences.

To help combat the violence confronting her fellow youth, Yemi Marie has launched the Draw The Line Anti-Violence, Anti-Bullying Campaign in Chicago schools and community centers. The campaign features Yemi Marie speaking and singing to students.

As a child, she sang in her grammar school’s talent show, wowing students and teachers with her take on “A Song for Mama,” made famous by Boyz II Men. Though influenced by Jennifer Hudson as well as Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Whitney Houston, the teen has developed her own style while learning to play the piano and fine-tuning her song-writing skills. In 2012, Yemi Marie was named Top Talent at the Talent Shines International Talent Convention. Her performances, for which she earned top scores against thousands of contestants, were broadcast live around the globe from Disney World in Orlando.

In the spring, Yemi Marie performed before thousands on the Main Stage each day of the 2013 Black Women’s Expo at McCormick Place in Chicago. The teen also performed for thousands of Chicago middle-school students at an Arie Crown Theatre concert for students who had “earned” this special treat based on school attendance and overall performance.

Yemi also was invited to participate in a “Pitch It To Me” networking event hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists Chicago. The teen artist sang her pitch to a panel of media experts from print and broadcast outlets, and received overwhelmingly positive response. That led to Yemi being interviewed the next morning on the Perri Small Show on historic WVON Radio. Since then the young singer has been invited to appear on WVON several times.

Yemi Marie’s current musical producers, mentors and influencers have worked with many of today’s marquee talents, but she remains humble and focused on enhancing her musical abilities and growth as an artist, vocalist and true entertainer.
