The story of bowlingovalmusic began in the mid 1990's in Chicago, Illinois USA. The Bowling Ovals began as an original rock band, performing in a self dubbed genre known as Comic Book Rock. They managed to exist for a couple of years or so, recording a couple albums worth of material.
From this spawned the idea of compositional ideas. At bowlingovalmusic we created three musical plays, which are music suites that tell a story. In 2000, we then found what we have yet to let go of in Music for Babies. Here we started to make loop-like loops of music and combine them in ever unique ways giving us a type of loop counterpoint or loop harmony. A harmony which includes a time aspect.
We do not want to call this a unique idea, people certainly have composed with this in mind certainly, but we just think it is appropriate to be making this music at this time.
It is minimalism. The loops repeat and repeat. But they may have different relative locations as they repeat. Each time we strive to see a three dimensional sound object that perhaps is unveiled as we listen. There has always been a sense of timelessness possible when listening to or composing music. We want to find a kind of beautiful musical fact each time with our loop counterpoint.
Another way is to say that we are aiming to remove any sense of the barline in music. The loops repeating in their own duration and space while sounding with other loops. Yet another way to describe bowlingovalmusic is to compare it to looking at a flower and all its parts.
Thank you for listening.
