Put your music where your marketing is, in this day and age of big media hype real music has taken a backseat to beef, media dollars and fame. Crown Juls is a music producer specialising in hip hop. His sound is raw and hard-hitting yet soulful.
Crown Juls is all about hip hop, from creation to the stage. His interest in Hip Hop developed into a passion as he researched the roots of the music and began listening to the founders: Grand Master Flash, The Cold Crush Brothers, Grand Mixer DST, Jazzy J, Africa Islam, Run DMC & LL Cool J to name but a few. Crown Juls says it may sound weird but hip hop felt like his older brother or a father figure because the music of hip hop spoke to him, guiding what he should or shouldn’t do. He feels it was more educational then, talking about black history and culture. He goes on to say “ The first time I heard of Marcus Garvy was in a rap song, it was like spending time with a cool uncle telling me stories about my culture and these were things I didn’t learn at school” He reflects that the theme of hip hop has changed today: it’s all about gangsters and girls. For him he thinks it is now hard to find someone to believe in: “Some rappers have good flow, others create cool music. I want to create music that is done right, I’m just trying to come with great music. My arsenal is wide enough to cover all the aspects of hip hop whether its modern or classic.”
Crown Juls started his music career as a dj then got into production. As he got more involved in production he began touring alongside Run DMC, Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Gangstarr, Cool G Rap, Naughty by Nature, KRS 1 and Common. Throughout this experience he learnt showmanship from serious players in hip hop . He then moved to New York and continued to DJ and spent time working on the art of production and putting on shows with D Block and Snyplife and touring with Iceman supporting DMX. Crown Juls remembers meeting Cool Herc in a club in Mount Vernon, New York and speaking to him about the history of hip hop and felt honoured to have met the man who founded hip hop.
Whilst at a hip hop festival in Switzerland he spoke to some fans and was surprised when they told him they were there to watch Lords of the Underground because they clearly weren’t old enough to have been born when they had been performing the first time around. This trip alone made him realise that love for real hip hop not only existed but that there was a potential market for his music.
Crown Juls is inspired by all genres of music and happily loses days at a time digging through records searching for that ever elusive sample or hook that will make his track stand out above all others. His music is created from samples, drum machines, keyboards, instruments or the latest software.
He believes that “to know your future you need to know your past” and in his quest for musical knowledge has been to the deep south of America where blues and soul began. Being in the South Bronx has given him a greater understanding of the roots of his music. “Hip hop started because of the social climate in New York with educational problems, gangs and the government. What is going on in the world determines how music is expressed”
Crown Juls career has enabled him to see the world and his goal for the future is to keep pushing real music, working with talented artists and musicians and for that purpose is building crownjulsmusic.com. He says “I want to make music that is timeless, that has soul”
