shootin' stars

Biography

shootin'stars are three dazzling Italian young women:
Francesca Bottaro: drums, clarinet, saxophone, piano, vocals, glockenspiel
Giulia Bottaro: fretless bass, metal flute, vocals, piano, metronome
Francesca Cricco: guitars, vocals, glockenspiel

shootin' stars is an avant-garde band made up of three Italian girls who possess the power to tease, caress and blow your mind away with their unique music. With their first album “in the morning – in the dark” they bring to new listeners the tunes that have seduced and enchanted their audiences with their velvety soft sounds of blues and dark wave. “in the morning – in the dark” womanly looks into the mysterious faces of the real and the unreal whose bounds are difficult to grasp. They manage to do it through their winds (clarinet, sax and flute), acid rhythms of electronic music, sinuous dark harmonies of guitars and fretless bass and their sophisticated interwoven voices.
“in the morning – in the dark” is a descent into femininity. It finds its essence in the double; in dark lights and luminous shadows.

Partially influenced by dark wave, blues and bands such as Tuxedomoon, P.J. Harvey and Radiohead, shootin’ stars managed to create their own unique sound, which seduces the audience with soft and sinuous melodies. Songs are in both English and Italian, incorporating poetry and culture from both nationalities and adding a zing of their own personalities.
shootin'stars performed at the Circolo degli Artisti in Rome in the opening act of the Icelandic quartet Amiina. In summer 2009, shootin’stars played in London, where they performed in clubs such as The Troubadour, The Buffalo Bar, The Albert&Pearl, The Library, etc. Back to Rome they performed an acoustic set at the marvelous Castel S. Angelo for the artwork exhibition “A l’infinito m’ergo”.

The band got together in 2003 and has been performing its music for art exhibitions, clubs and Italian musical contests such as:
• Biella Festival: a national contest of singer and songwriters;
• Premio Fabrizio De Andre’: a national contest dedicated to a well known Italian singer and songwriter;
• M.E.I: a national meeting of independent labels;
• Alburni Jazz Festival 2011
• Performances for art exhibitions in Via Giulia, Villa Piccolomini and Torretta Valadier in ponte Milvio, etc.
• Le sorelle di Shakespeare (Shakespeare’s sisters): a performance about the role of women in art, mingling theatre, literature and shootin’stars music;
• "Leggete mai i libri che bruciate?": a performance of readings and music which shows the main literary influences of their texts. It had been successfully performed in several libraries in Rome; "Amore Verde", 2010.
• Fin dentro l’appartamento: A theatrical performance presented by the Tutti Estauriti Company of Rome, used shootin’ stars songs throughout its play.
• They also had a period of training in the C.E.T. (European Tuscolan Centre) directed by the Italian author Mogol.
• Some of their songs are included in compilations such as “romarock-romapop” in 2007, “ Parlare Musica ” in 2007, “ 9° Biella festival autori cantautori” in 2007, and “ Premio Massimo di Somma ” in 2008, M.E.I. 2010.
