The Maybelles

Biography

“ Of all the music the Be Good Tanya's gave me, my favorite is The Maybelles. They sound like they might be the grand daughters of country greats from the 1930's, The Wild Wood Flowers” Charlie Gillett - BBC Radio London
The Maybelles are culled from members of Jan's award winning NYC country band, The Cheap Dates; and touring members of The Maybelles who began as a duo Jan Bell and Melissa Carper in the Ozarks. Violinist, Rima Fand (Luminescent Orchestrii) has played and sang with Jan for ten years. Megan Palmer joined The Maybelles as a multi instrumentalist in 2009, bringing piano and her powerful soprano to the realm. Tim Luntzel (upright bass) is the honorary 'May Bro' and tours with Roseanne Cash amongst other world class artists. Hilary Hawke (banjo) has been a Maybelle since they opened for Wanda Jackson in NYC; and joined them at The International Bluegrass Music Awards (IBMA) in Nashville. Philippa Thompson has played with Jan since 2007. An evocative and versatile singer and performer she brings fiddle, accordion, percussion and the saw! Today you might see a duo, trio, four or five piece band - depending where and when and what works best!

I love bands that are willing to explore new territory. I love the instrumental combination, the old-time real country feel, the close harmonies and the sprightly fiddle playing. I think you all are onto something big.-Dave Higgs, NPR Bluegrass Breakdown
