Dark Sunshine is a beautiful blend of heartfelt, honest ballads and edgy 70's inspired rock. Sarah Swanson's haunting voice and captivating style is a strong presence both in recordings and live performances. Her songs on Dark Sunshine are intensely personal and yet still universal to her listeners. The single "FREE" gained wide national airplay with some stations playing this song every day for weeks. All of the songs on this CD received airplay on a variety of commercial and independent radio stations across the country. Several stations featured this artist and CD including Michigan's rock station KLT in Northern Michigan and WDET in Detroit. This CD made it onto the national Americana Music Association charts.
Dark Sunshine was recorded in the acclaimed Michigan studio Big Sky Recording under the direction of Geoff Michael. A high quality recording, Dark Sunshine was intentionally left somewhat raw, warm, and intense rather than erring on overproduction. The band played a tremendous part in the sound, most notably guitarist Patrick Thomas. Other players include Rod Capps on bass and Chuck Mauk on drums (Billy Adams plays drums on FREE and DANCE WITH ME, two of the album favorites). Sarah plays piano on Dark Sunshine including the stripped-down versions of fan favorites I KNOW YOU and AFRAID OF EVERYTHING (the latter originally featured on Sarah Swanson's "Stories" album), both which shed light on the fragile side of life and heartbreak.
Dark Sunshine is unique collection of songs that brings to mind a wide range of artists including Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac, Lucinda Williams, Carole King, Sarah McLachlan, and even Led Zeppelin and Billie Holiday. Dark Sunshine symbolizes both the dark and the light which radiates throughout this collections of songs.
