These pieces are all well known among classical guitarists, several of them being student repertoire standards. I have chosen some for their special meaning to me, for example, the simple and stately Sarabande that I performed for a love scene in a local opera production of “Dido and Aeneas”. The Afro-Cuban Lullaby, as recorded by Christopher Parkening, takes me back to the 1980 master class that I enjoyed with him. Also included are personal favorites like Luiz Bonfá’s lovely Manhã de Carnaval, along with my arrangement of his Samba de Orpheu, and José Merlin’s haunting Evocacion, which I often play as the finale to an evening of dinner music. This is a wide-ranging collection of my favorites, suitable for a relaxing evening or as background music for a social occasion.
