notes

Aces Over Kings is a four piece pop-punk band from Seattle, Washington. Its members (Josh, James, Aaron, and Brian) have been together for approximately two and a half years, releasing their first independent CD in early 2004 titled fight or flight, and a second CD in the fall of 2005 titled What Doesn’t Kill You… Their music is melodic, varying from fast punk rock to slower pop-punk, and is positive and upbeat with no profanity.

Aces Over Kings began playing shows around the Seattle area in May 2004 with great reception from the local scene. In 2005 the band played 30 shows around the Puget Sound area. Favorite venues played include El Corazon (Graceland), The Mercury, Rendezvous, Studio 7, The Lobo, Nectar, Grant’s Pizza, Tost, The Central, 4th AVE Tavern, and The Stanwood Hotel.

In March 2005, the song Caffeine from Fight or Flight received national airplay on the Alan Kabal Show (www.radioalan.com) during its “Moment of Greatness” segment, a regular piece that features unsigned bands. Caffeine is also featured on an off-roading DVD titled Wheeling the Northwest 2, produced by Donkey Worx Productions (www.donkeyworx.net). The band was also selected to perform live on a television show in Ellensburg, Washington called Ellensburg Extreme. In April 2005 the band received some praise in issue #98 of local Seattle music publication Tablet Magazine (www.tabletmag.com). Starting in January 2006 the band launched a national specialty radio promotion with Notorious Radio. In the first week they charted on Friday Morning Quarterback (www.fmqb.com) at number 13 with their single “Homeward Bound.”

Aces Over Kings’ web presence is growing by the month; its website received 1,290 unique visitors in January 2006 alone. The band has over 18,000 friends and 23,000 plays (and counting) on myspace.com, and has a presence on nearly every major punk and music internet website. Fan mail has arrived from all over the world, including England, Canada, Australia, Philippines, Germany, France, Denmark, Japan, and the US.

The band has worked hard to market itself in ways that are both effective and economical. A sizable amount of merchandise is available at every show, including CDs, T-shirts for both men and women, buttons and stickers. They have always given away buttons and stickers at shows to demonstrate their appreciation for the fans.

Aces Over Kings is highly motivated to make a lasting musical impression on both a national and international level. They are willing to work as hard as necessary to make something out of the music and melody they hear in their hearts, and so they will be playing shows, promoting, touring, making friends, and writing music until the entire world has a chance to hear them. Aces Over Kings is here for the long haul, so keep an eye out wherever you are - there’s a good chance you will be hearing about them!

Here’s A.O.K.’s follow up to the Fight or Fight EP, which had it’s smash hit, “Caffeine”. Their first EP, I thought was great and didn’t see much room for improvement, and I saw “Caffeine” as their benchmark to live up to in future recordings. This CD, recorded about eighteen months from the first, still maintains their unique style, but shows some growth, and some subtle changes here and there. It’s a little heavier, and also shows a lot of patience on behalf of the songwriter to not just bust out another rock song, but to fine tune it to perfection. I’ve always been drawn towards lyrics myself. there’s a million rockin’ songs out there, but what do you have to say? A.O.K. not only writes great lyrics, but I think that they stumbled into what the Portuguese call duende. To make a long story short, duende is that deep dark undertone that is necessary for a song to survive and touch people. It’s the blues beneath the surface that separates real musicians from that guy who wrote “All The Small Things”. It’s a love song that braces itself for an equally opposite rejection. It’s why the world knows Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy, and Don McLean. (Search: The Duende: Theory and Divertissement by Federico Garcia Lorca) “In Your Arms” is by far my favourite song here. It gives this album the right to use Neitzsche’s most famous quote for the title. It’s a song of survival, and weathering the storm. Hope, desperation, struggle, then relief. Overall, I think Aces Over Kings is doing it right. They’re producing great songs, they have something to say, they’re a great all around band for all ages, they’re a positive influence on all these crazy kids running around, and their sound, though somewhat timeless, is what seems to be popular right now.
