notes
Whether it's playing to a sold-out crowd at New York City's famous Knitting Factory, or entertaining Angelinos on the Santa Monica Promenade,Akiva's always up for a show. "I once played for group of Italian teenagers on an overnight boat to Greece, they were great!"
Akiva got his start playing Counting Crows covers for classmates while studying neurobiology at UMASS. He pushed any ideas of a serious career in music out of his head as he traveled overseas to follow his original dream of becoming a brain surgeon. But one can't deny true passions, and soon Akiva found himself spending more time playing gigs in English Pubs and popping up on local radio than dissecting gray matter.
Eventually settling back in New York, Akiva hit the local music scene with more enthusiasm than ever before, bringing his mellow soul to such sought-after venues as The Bitter End and the Tribeca Rock Club. Then, a chance encounter with producer Phil Jimenez (Wheatus) at a friend's backyard wedding led to his critically acclaimed debut release, "Bueno Y Sano". As one DJ put it, "it's one of those CDs you don't want to let your friend borrow. Laid back groove and Muy Caliente!" (UTA Radio).
No longer just a well-known local fixture, the word continues to spread as radio stations from Santa Monica to Boston add gems from Bueno Y Sano to their playlists. Akiva has become a much sought after opener for acts like RUSTED ROOT, JOSH KELLEY, TOBY LIGHTMAN, RON SEXSMITH and has showcased at numerous conferences from Atlantis (Atlanta) to the Midwest Music Summit(Indianapolis). His music is also featured on various compilations from Sonicbids Listen Volume 1 to Decent Xposure and he was selected as a spotlight artist by ARIZONA JEANS.

Everyone should have this CD by Akiva
author: Matt RufoIt's awesome. One of the best I have heard in a long time. This is what should be on the radio. It's amazing how he combines Blues, Jazz, Pop and Rock into something very special. Keep up the great work Akiva!!!!! It was an honor to be at Umass Amherst with you many years ago. Can't wait to hear your next CD.
December, Summer soundtrack
author: MattThis is best described as the sort of Cd that you might hear in a great bar. Imagine that you are sitting chatting with your friends, having a few drinks and a laugh. Suddenly you all stop talking for one of those conversation pauses and you realize your foot is tapping away... when you listen a bit closer, you can't help but think, Hell yeah!, that's good!

"Bueno y Sano", breathes new and refreshing life into a stagnant and otherwise complacent year in the music industry. Such original material as this will be appreciated by those who live for new and eclectic artists. Akiva brings a vibe and confidence to his music that is both genuine and true. It's an album that inspires and captivates nothing but a "fun loving, shake ya ass, rocking good time" In the words of the man himself, "It's just life, and you've got to live it."
Soul man!
author: EmekLooks like Stevie Wonder is alive and well and seeing much better now! Akiva's got the melodies twisting and turning at his command and doing all sorts of things respectable melodies wouldn't do for anybody else. And at the very heart of things pumps a sensual, tireless pulse I never have to check on - I just tap in, and flow with the veins of the earth until all breathing stops
songs are upbeat and fun, cool grooves!!
author: taylorThis album is great to listen to when you're driving down the highway; it keeps you company. It's got funky rythms and cool beats. Akiva is a fun artist and the cd really reflects that.
John Mayer, Jack Johnson, G-Love? OK, but add one more...
author: Don from KCI really enjoyed Bueno y Sano. I first heard tracks from this CD on the MP3 website, and all three I immediately liked. It's rare for that to happen with me, especially since all three songs were pretty different. Anyway, this is the kind of CD that gets catchier and catchier the more you hear it. Oh, and I agree with the header line above about Akiva sounding like John Mayer, Jack Johnson, and G-Love, but I also think there's an element of Third Eye Blind there as well. Definitely worth a listen.
rock, soul, with some catchy flow
author: RootThis record is hot, I havent taken it out of my playa yet, its got all the ingredients for a home baked, soulful, melodic ,masterpiece....
Buy this CD if you want to shake it like it ain’t no thang!
author: MC KayteMy friend is a touring musician and is constantly making mixes of the music he hears about before the rest of the world. He came over to my house and my roommate and were dancing and singing to Akiva’s song ‘Moves.’ This prompted him to pick up the CD for me as soon as it came out... I had already heard a few tracks off of the disc prior to it’s release and the whole CD is Amazing! I would recommend this CD to anyone that wants to shake it like it ain’t no thang!
one of a kind
author: RoxyThe CD rocks. The sound and lyrics are innovative and inviting. The kind of CD that's always in your player. I'm sure we will be hearing more of him in the future...

21st century soul music from NYC singer songwriter
author: Brian SendrowitzAkiva has delivered a triumphant debut album. This is 21st century soul music—from the Curtis Mayfield-style strings on “Home” to the heart-on-sleeve poetics of “Ordinary Rockets.” Akiva writes the kind of songs that will draw comparisons to the likes of John Mayer and Jason Mraz before leaving them in the dust. His lyrical delivery is conversational. This allows him to achieve a higher level of poetic depth without any loss of accessibility—and Akiva’s not afraid to tackle some heavy philosophical themes, whether he’s referencing the mythological figure Daedalus in the transcendent “Faithful” or in “Laughing Tuesday’s Gone,” letting the “white men in suits” with their “money clips” know that this is his world, just in case they made the mistake of thinking otherwise. The production is eclectic and luminous—further evidence of the fact that Phil Jimenez is one of the most creative and talented young producers in the business. Bueno y Sano is the kind of record that will get your mind and body moving.
Inspiring and full of nice rhythms!
author: MoonGirlNYCI bought this CD from AKIVA knowing it will be nothing short of a compilation of really great sounding songs, and sure enough that is precisly what came about. Attended numerous of his perfomances and even know I had a pretty good sense of what will make it to the album it was still one great surprise that made my drive down to Washington DC a memorable experience. SO thanks AKIVA, rock on!
Good and Healthy Quality and Quantity
author: dr. ghostFrom the opening seconds of Akiva's 'Bueno y Sano', originality soars. He plays in a genre populated by Mayers and Grays and Johnsons, but the music should only be compared lightly to these contemporary troubadours, for Akiva's world has more substance than Mayer's, is more organic than Gray's, and is a bit more effectively centered than the flighty Jack Johnson. The opening track, the irresistably singable 'Babylon', peaks right away to set the stage for the valley of the following track, 'Ireland', a punchy ballad with definite depth. The meat of the record is comprised of the pop optimism of 'This Is Life', followed by 'Home', a decidedly danceable groove machine, the chaotic and smiling 'George Lucas', and 'Moves', a bravado laden anthem of front porch sexuality, complete with a near-perfect bridge. Akiva continues his mastery of the repeatedly listenable song with the upbeat 'Laughing Tuesday's Gone' and the emotional 'Ordinary Rockets'. A last bit of funk is injected with the storytelling of 'Black & White' before the record concludes with 'Faithful', a simple ballad of self-examination in which he proclaims "I'm passin' by the paralyze". If, by 'the paralyze' Akiva is referring to a stagnant and bland singer/songwriter genre, then by all means, yes, he is passing them by.
