Country girl meets city girl. Nature meets industry. A sophisticated hybrid of folk and electronica, Andrea Revel's second LP Citysong has been dubbed 'folk-tronica' or more affectionately "Morcheeba goes to Nashville". It's a natural evolution for a musician transplanted from Calgary's hotbed of folk to the urban soundscapes of Montreal.

Dedicated to twisting the expectations of a single genre, Andrea has taken folk into the world of playful and sly emotion - from the femme-fatale of the 1920's flapper to the lovelorn and always proper fifties girl. Still keeping to what she knows best, Citysong showcases Andrea's trademark finger-style guitar playing, worldly melodies and true-to-the-bone lyrics.

The transition from acoustic to electronic was not easy for Andrea. Although inspired by the softer sounds of urban music (Jurassic 5, Spearhead, Portishead), she couldn't fathom writing in this style. It wasn't until Andrea collaborated with electronic producer Michael McCann on his project Behavior, that she could see where electronic music could take her writing. Andrea was so inspired that she decided to abandon studying the flamenco guitar and East Indian Classical voice to delve into the world of bleeps and beats.

Andrea's debut LP, Mile 0 (zero), remains a devout testament to her folk roots. It was proclaimed one of the best folk albums of 2000 by CKUA radio and carved Andrea a niche in the Canadian music scene. In the Spring of 2002 the single 'Hands Bound' received over 4 plays a day on Calgary's commercial radio station Peak 107.3, and in 2004 her songs were featured in the Nike sponsored kayak video Girls at Play.

In 2002 Andrea spearheaded the Rogue Folks series bent on showcasing urban folk artists in western Canada. Rogue Folks (Kris Demeanor, Chantal Vitalis and Andrea) is known for a wry, irreverent and downright clever show.

  • Having a Revelation...
    author: Ezra Soiferman

The song "Jezebel" is ingenious and a complete pleasure to listen to. The best darn "bedroom recording" I've ever heard. There is no rhythm or groove quite like the one pioneered for this song. I am in awe of humankind (and specifically this artist) for creating such mysterious smoothness. Here's to more musical Revelations for all. Here's to the power of "Jezebel". Regards to all from Montreal. Ez

This is my favorite CD in my collection. It never gets boring. I'm totally hypnotized by it! Everyone who knows and loves real music should have this disc in their collection.

  • Bravo to a unique angelic soul that fills many genres!.
    author: Kathy, Uptown Girl

She has a voice that is a cross between a mysteriously haunted yet angelic soul. She far exceeds her age with her unique style of singing -- extremely imaginative. And her guitar playing is likewise unique! Story Untold is my favorite, if I have to have one. I wish her much success in the years to come. I likewise was introduced to her by ClapShakeJump which she did a fantastic job with. She definitely can fill various genres and I hope she gets the support she is so deserving of. Best wishes, Andrea!

  • It's on my Christmas list
    author: Bill "The Red Baron"

I had to find the voice behind Clap Shake Jump. This music is different then anything else out there. The more you listen to it the more you love it. I hope she gets the support she needs to stay around for a long time. Flapper Jane is my favorite, daddy-o.

  • Beautiful haunting voice...perfect for an introspective day
    author: Ami

This album is perfect for a rainy day wrapped up in a cozy blanket or a candlelit dinner party. This album is an eclectic sound--sure to please anyone who wants to explore "non-traditional" folk...with electronica overtones. Andrea's voice is full of emotion which is beautifully transferred to the listener. Highly recommended!!!

  • Brian Eno would be proud...
    author: Jason Scjmeoder from Exclaim!

The test of a great songwriter nowadays seems to be not only how well they can perform with just an acoustic guitar (anybody can do that), but how well they can incorporate contemporary sounds into their approach. Some, like Joe Henry, have excelled at it in recent years, but many end up lost in the world of drum & bass. Not Andrea Revel, though. On this sophomore release, the Montreal-via-Calgary native has painted a mesmerising sonic landscape, which is more importantly supported by equally enchanting songs. Although she descrbes it herself as "Morcheeba goes to Nashville," Citysong's vibe is more accurately represented in how well Revel manages to inject soul into cold, clinical electronica. Failure to do so is almost always the downfall of songwriters who undertake such an experiment, and even Jeff Tweedy could take some lessons from Revel, judging by the ironic lifelessnees of "A Ghost is Born". Most of Revel's songs here, such as the shimmering "The Past is Never Past," and the utterly gorgeous "Rainy Day," will convince even the staunchest traditionalist that modern technology and old fashioned balladry can co-exist. Brain Eno would be proud.

  • Awesome sound, a pleasure to the senses!

Andrea Revel is a great artist, with a great sound. It's excellent to see a Canadian artist producing such a great sound!

  • Excellent second release which shows tremendous growth.
    author: Dawnelle Salant

Citysong is a superb listen. Andrea has managed to remain true to her folk roots, while incorporating new and exciting beats into her songs. Her lyrics, as always, are intuitive and thoughtful, especially on the poignant Don’t You Forget Me and Rainy Day. Any girl can relate……… The fast and happy beat of Flapper Jane provides a nice change of pace and Andrea’s smoky voice flings you back to the roaring twenties. The calming White Noise is so catchy that you can’t help but sing along. But my favourite tune would have to be The Past is Never Past. The haunting melody tickles the soul and the lyrics are, well, spot on.

  • Great music, great lyrics, killer beat. What more could you possibly want?
    author: The Ruiner

Review of the single "Story Untold" from Gigatracks. Great music, great lyrics, killer beat. What more could you possibly want? 'Story Untold' from Andrea Revel is a nice cross between electronica and pop. It really is a nice mixture of both. She has a great voice and the track is very reminiscent of Beth Orton's last album Daybreaker, which is a pretty big compliment since I love that album. Her style is also slightly reminiscent of Dido as well. The song's got a very tight groove to it and it really keeps you on your toes. Never gets dull. Andrea's new album [Citysong] came out on April 23. So I'd advise anyone digging this track to head over to her site and pick up the new album, which has 'Story Untold' on it.

  • Review from the Montreal Gazette: Thursday April 22
author: Jordan Zivitz for the Montreal Gazette

Folksingers who turn to electronica can be dicey prospects, often sounding like the most self-conscious of bandwagon-jumpers. But Andrea Revel has the right idea: Make the beats part of the fabric, rather than layering them on top of already-complete songs. Revel's second album might be a collection of bedroom tapes, but they're hardly callow rehearsals. The former Calgarian (and current Montrealer) is introspective without being indulgent and sophisticated without being stand-offish, and knows when to keep the machinery to a background hum: Don't You Forget Me and Rainy Day are affecting ballads that don't need much of a programmer's touch, so they don't get much of one. The country inflections on some of the down-tempo songs are signs of where Revel comes from; Calgary's loss is our gain.
