Singer, trumpeter, arranger, composer, and lyricist Anna Callahan celebrates the release of her debut CD, My Ideal. Since her first performance as a soloist in November of 2000, she is quickly becoming known as one of Los Angeles' most compelling jazz musicians. She mixes intimate vocals with Chet Baker-esque trumpet solos and dazzling scat singing over a backdrop of her own arrangements of standards and original compositions.

"Never have I encountered a female jazz singer who had the attributes that Anna Callahan has," says Buddy Bregman, arranger/producer for Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day, Nancy Wilson, and others. "She's Ella and Diana Krall rolled into one young, tall and extremely beautiful lady! And like Chet Baker she plays a great horn: trumpet and flugelhorn. Like the current careers of Jane Monheit and Diana Krall, Anna Callahan will now make that 'duet' of female stars a 'trio'!"

Before beginning her solo career, Anna taught Vocal Jazz at California State University at Long Beach where she led award-winning ensembles. In 2001 before recording My Ideal, she toured Brazil with the Ray Conniff Orchestra and Choir. She is the author of a book on arranging published by Hal Leonard; she was also one of four arrangers in UAAS, an international service, and has given arranging clinics at national workshops.

"Singer-trumpeter Anna Callahan strikes gold with her debut CD," says LA Jazz Scene reviewer Roger Crane, "which includes songs by such noted composers as Rodgers & Hart, Irving Berlin, and Jobim as well as five superb originals. If you love the great songs sung with warmth and panache, you will love Anna Callahan. Her uncomplicated phrasing and sunny timbre give the lyrics a clear-headed beauty and her soft-focus trumpet playing is right out of the Chet Baker school. Her music, whether played or sung, is straight from the heart - without any detours."

My Ideal can be heard on dozens of jazz stations around the country and is available for purchase through CDBaby.com. Anna has performed at clubs throughout the Los Angeles area including the Jazz Bakery, Steamers, Spazio, Lunaria, Charlie O's and others. She performs with Los Angeles' best musicians including Shelley Berg, Tamir Hendelman, Ron Anthony, and Barry Zweig.

QUOTES ABOUT ANNA CALLAHAN

"Anna's got it all! She sings with great intonation, crisp rhythmic phrases, and a clearly musical conception. Her original songs sound like standards that you've somehow never heard before, but want to hear again and again. And she plays some nice trumpet too! Check her out!"
Barry Zweig, LA-based jazz guitarist

"Anna's smooth, silky tone will entrance you. It has no equal."
Peter Zuercher, fan

"It's not often I see a vocalist the caliber of Anna Callahan, who is also a fine instrumentalist, as in her case, an excellent trumpet and flugelhorn artist.... The first visual impression of Callahan was that of the clean-cut, pretty girl next door. However, I've not yet had so talented a neighbor. Selecting emotion-filled old standards, she sang softly with a quiet sophistication and solid presentation. Callahan demonstrated vocal gymnastics and occasional scatting around melodies with marvelous voice control, clearly in control of what she was doing. It becomes an introspective experience for the audience, with her style drawing the listeners into the lyrics, bringing out memories and thoughts."
Harvey Barkan, LA Jazz Scene

"When Anna sings her warm and lively spirit sings with her. It is not only voice, it is pure energy and passion. And nobody in the audience remains untouched."
Ilaria Serra, "Il Gazzettino"

"Since the young Anna Callahan sings and plays trumpet it is tempting to compare her to Chet Baker. Such a comparison is meaningful because Callahan does both very well and because she has the ease and lambent delicacy of Baker. Whether singing or playing there is coherence to her music; she plays and sings melodies, not notes.... One thing that you immediately notice about her singing and horn playing is that Callahan always knows where the pulse is. Her honey voice, her natural sense of swing and her phrasing make me think of Nat King Cole. Callahan is also a surprisingly good composer. We are fortunate to have the wonderful, young, enthusiastic Callahan in our midst."
Roger Crane, LA Jazz Scene

"There were brief appearances by guest vocalists invited out of the audience. The last vocalist, Anna Callahan, was a real treat. Showing terrific control on "It's Spring Again," she used her voice instrumentally at times, fostering a spectacular group presentation of that classic. Callahan then fired-up her trumpet for an instrumental number, the delicious tearjerker, "Days Of Wine And Roses." It was reassuring to see and hear this multi-talented young musician performing this kind of music and charming the audience."
Harvey Barkan, LA Jazz Scene

"Anna's voice is so warm and sincere, I love hearing her sing. Also, the influences of her background as a jazz trumpet player and arranger are very apparent in her voice; she is a cut above so many other local jazz singers. It's rare to find her unique combination of talents."
Michele Weir, internationally renowned vocal jazz educator

"Anna sits right in the pocket of her music, both vocally and on the trumpet-a combination that's simultaneously slam-dunk and sophisticated."
Amy "Bob" Engelhardt, vocalist with the Bobs

"It always fascinates me when someone who is born with immense talent actually develops that talent into immense skill. Anna is one of those rare people. First you hear her trumpet playing with exquisite tone. Then you hear her silky voice. Then she scats. And at the end of it all you realize she wrote the tune. Amazing! She combines original tunes, standards, and great musicians to create a live performance that's even better than the CD."
Eric Bradley, Vocalist for Rosemary Clooney and Barbra Streisand

"I can't describe how impressed I am with Anna's honest talent-she is music. Her arrangements are superb, and she always knows what's happening and goes with it. She is sure to quickly become recognized as one of the great jazz singers."
Dr. Laurie Franks, performed in 250 Equity musicals (14 on Broadway)

  • American Idol this is NOT! Hooray!
    author: Jennifer Geistler

In this age of melisma to the extreme, it's so great to hear someone like Anna. I snicker when artists talk about their "craft," but Anna actually is a master of her particular craft. Score #1: Anna is accurate, accurate, accurate. And that's a big deal as a musician. That's how you start building your work. Score #2: Anna's phrasing is superb. Being an arranger, she has a real understanding of what can come of a song from a simple melody to the finished product. She makes standards unique to her. Score #3: Can Anna scat? Awww yeah! And, with scat, either you can do it or you can't... no in-between. She's at "Ella" level... Nuff said. Score #4: The horn, man. The horn. Self-taught and such mastery... it's almost not fair. Score #5: Anna's an old friend of mine... and she has excellent taste... in both friends and music!

  • beautiful voice and beautiful trumpet playing...beautiful.
    author: paul nelson

I teach music. I use this disc to show what music can be. The vocals are classic and the trumpet playing is beautiful. Let's face it...it's all about sound, and Anna has a beautiful sound. While Chet is an influence, Anna also takes her music in some new directions.

  • awesome talent- horn or voice-much potential for her
    author: Manuel Banuelos

The CD is never far from me, I absolutely love Anna's voice and her flugle horn is sooo mellow. I will be at the Jazz Bakery when she returns to our shores.

Anna's My Ideal is an essential addition to any Jazz Collection. Her instrumental & voice solos are cool and creative. This is one of the best.

  • Clear voice and strong horn
    author: Judi Weiner

Not only does Anna wrap her voice around each note, but her trumpet and flugelhorn are most impressive. Haven't heard a contemporary scat singer worth listening to? Anna will show the genre is alive and very well.

  • author: Chaz @ gigrigs!

Sexy horn, sexy voice, sexy lady. What an under rated talent. This music truely makes you feel good while driving with the sunroof open. My 13 year old daughter stole it for three days and played it constantly. Here at gigrigs drummers are king..... Maybe Anna Callahan should be queen. Good Luck, Chaz
