notes

AREA 15(TM), LIVE is the result of three talented sidemen who burned out on performing homogenized, cookie cutter, cliched music for uninspired band leaders.

AREA 15(TM), takes its influence from Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin  and will use any song as a vehicle for improvisation - employing reverse engineering and extreme dynamics...

While packing up their equipment one night after a lounge gig, they mutually agreed that they should get another gig together and play with reckless abandon - no musical restrictions.

The drummer, Ben Makinen, scored the gig.
The guitarist, Mitch Chmara, inspired the naming of the group with his sensitivity towards the outer limits.
The bass player, Eric Thorin, had a mile-wide grin that challenged anyone to throw any chord and any groove his way at any time.

The first four tracks on AREA 15 LIVE happened in one take, on one night, after no rehearsal. The fifth track happened the same way-only three months later at a different night club.

With Mitch's originals (the first two tracks) he simply told the guys what he had in mind, a couple chords and a feel, and then he said,"Just follow me..."

The standards were treated as launching pads for contemporary improvisation/conversation.

  • Drivin' sounds to stir mind and soul...and other parts
    author: Evert Makinen

The maillady just delivered the Area 51 CD to my little home out in the woods of Michigan. Now I feel connected to the larger universe. You can hear these guys listening to each other, and letting their fingers do the talking. It’s exciting…and interesting. They get you, and you think you’ve got it. Then they draw you on to something else, and you’re still there. And you keep going with them. Damn! That’s good. The Coltrane piece is fine, but their own compositions are finest. Luxuriate over Blues in Flat 9 and, yum, Alternate Reality. This album is a fine treat of musicianship, mind, and soul. Now, in the interests of full disclosure, I am Ben's dad. But never mind the blood. My dad's a musician too. I'm not. I just love the good stuff. I've been up close with Coltrane, Donald Byrd, Slide Hampton, Brubeck...and been tripped out with Santana, Jefferson Airplane/Starship.... Eric Satie, Gorecki. I just like to say good things about sounds and people I like. I know I'm responsible for my words. I'll put it on the line: These guys will give you great heart-mind music with skill. It will jangle your corpuscles -- and maybe even your gonads.

  • As LIVE as you can get!

There are still explorers out there! Adventures are necessarily dangerous and unscripted, and it's hard to find a better combination of talent and fearlessness than you'll find with Area 15. Not for the fearful soul or the artless ear. For the rest of us, though, this thing is kickin'.

  • Very innovating and exciting. Great command of the guitar and use of effects.

  • killer guitar jam fest

Wow, what a mind blowing cd. If you get one instrumental rock or acid jazz cd this is the one. After 12 or so listens I put it on my top five of all time. The guitar is searing, explosive while being melodic and the rest of the band hold their own. The music is close to being slam jazz and way out from being ordinary instrumental rock. The fact this is a jam band even makes them better; instead of just limiting it to just a few tasty licks, the improv nature of the band gives a lot of room for stretching and confounding complexities. Do yourself a favor and get this cd now; you will not be disappointed.
