"If honky-tonk has a future, hopefully it will sound a lot like [Arty Hill's] 'Driftin' In' or "Bring out the Bible (we ain't got a prayer).'"
- Houston Press
"Back on the Rail" is the first full-length release from Baltimore's country/rockabilly champs Arty Hill & The Long Gone Daddys. Featuring Arty Hill's soulful vocals and peerless songwriting, Dave Chappel's masterful Telecaster, and Craig Stevens' driving shuffle-beat.
Alt-Country Godfather Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers) says:
I first met Arty Hill in a small Baltimore club in 2004. He handed me a CD, said he was an old fan, and asked me to listen to it...I was profoundly glad I did. I was thoroughly impressed, especially with the song "Tammerlane." Simply put, the song floored me.
I saw Arty again at another Maryland show six months later. He was in fact the only paying audience member there to see me! He ended up on stage with me singing harmony on my old Jason and the Scorchers songs and ripping out fabulous punkgrass guitar licks. He made the night for me. Without his presence I probably would have been borderline suicidal after that show!!
He gave me a full copy of his new CD. Again I was most impressed. Songs like "Jackson Shake," "Drifting In," and "Back On The Rail" perfectly delivered that jumping old country vibe so many try to nail and so many fail at. Great songs, great production, and great singing/picking - it's all here. And pay close attention to "Tammerlane." It is a masterpiece.

author: calvin brownHeard Arty on WTMD for the first time. Sorry it took so long bought the CD and couldn't stop playing it. I am hard pressed to pick favorite but it pushed I would say Back on he rail. Plan on seeing arty in August when he comes to town
Great Stuff. I really enjoyed this right away.
author: Jim SaundersI heard Arty Hill interviewed on The Bob Edwards Show. The few clips he played really struck me so I went to CD Baby and picked up a copy. I have listened to it a few times already and have enjoyed EVERY song. I can't get "I left Highlandtown" out of my head. All the tunes are catchy and take you back to when music was music. Buy it, and you'll be glad you did.
I Can't Stop Playin' This
author: Ellsworth RiddickI bought this CD for a road trip I was taking from Frederick, MD to Cheyenne, WY. I only had this, Neko Case and Brian Wilson "Smile" in the car. I'll tell ya, I played this one over and over and eventually forgot about the other two. Now, I love those other discs. But this just seemed to click. It went so perfectly with the atmosphere of travelling west. Arty and the gang may be from Baltimore, but their music is universal. This disc would hypnotize you in Uzbekistan as it would in Abilene!!
Great CD. Just as enjoyable as in person
author: TonyThis CD has great music. I like the whole CD. Track 5 Highland Town is especially nice. The songs have a great tempo and make good use of the group's technical skills.
Great CD from the "Greatest City in America"
author: BruceA friend told me about this after he heard it on Roots Radio. I looked it up and gave a listen and immeaditaly bought it and i've been listening to it ever since. Just when I thought music was in a slump again, this came along and refreshed everything for me. Thanks Arty!
Ol' school, kick-ass country
author: R.T.One of the best new artists out today. If you want real music, this is for you. While Arty is a throw-back to the great days of country music, he's fresh, and this baby will blow you away for sure. Don't miss out out on this one.
This is what i like
author: Del in WhaleysvilleI'm primarily a rockabilly and blues fan. My sister in law gave me a copy of this CD for Christmas. Well, I have been playing this non-stop for weeks. I especially like "I Left Highlandtown" (not just because my grandmother lives there) - it's a nice song with a kiss-off style message. Tammerlane is a beautiful song also. I'd compare this to maybe Tom Rush mixed with Eddy Arnold or Dave Alvin meets Bill Haley meets Starday-era George Jones. Overall, a really addictive disc!
Roadhouse Mayhem
author: WendellThis CD is the fire water you need to knock back the traildust. Arty and the boys take it up a notch. Man, these guys just keep getting better. At times I envision a juke joint with chicken wire in front of the stage and sawdust on the floor with dolled up bad girls and GIs on leave doing the dirty boogie. At other times I'm taken to a pastoral setting of big pines and a gently flowing brook after Sunday services. This is the weekend's soundtrack. It's as pure as spring water and as raw as bathtub gin.
great honky tonk music - original and clever
author: FredThese songs are clever, original, new takes on old themes. The guitar work is great, the singing is fine. I was looking to hear music like this with little hope of finding it, so I am very glad I heard it on Roots Rock Radio. This is good honky tonk music - original and professional.
I Love These Songs
author: ClayGreat playing and great singing, not to mention the wonderful songs. Pick this one up! This band is very popular in Maryland. I can see why!!
This Music Takes Me Back To A Simpler Time
author: BordenWhen I bought Arty's first release, "Baltimore Reasons", I just about wore out the grooves due to heavy rotation on my turntable (probably because it was a CD). I'm just kidding, but the reason I mention turntables is because this disc and that one one take me back to a time when the family would sit around and play 78s on the Victrola. Seriously, this is pure, unpretentious music. The songs retain a freshness that comes directly from the same source that Roy Acuff and T. Texas Tyler tapped into. In this age of country hokum, it is nice to hear a band that sounds both traditional and modern. The songwriting is clever and the band rocks. Arty's singing is exciting and impassioned. These Daddies from The Land Of Pleasant Living just keep getting better. I would highly recommend this disc to anyone who likes rock and roll and/or good country music.
