notes

ARTIST: AGENT DOUBLE E - Renée Asteria

"sunny live sound is similar to Kate Bush, Lene Lovich, Portishead & Sade, peppered with tropical sounding Latin and reggae beats (...)

Upbeat, powerful and tight show with her band that had the crowd dancing all night" (Dan-o)

"Musically adventurous, lyrically innovative ... unusual vocal flourishes and non-typical constructs, her lyrics bring a kind of magical realism to everything from human relationships to the battle between man and mosquito ... free-flowing, high-spirited, extremely engaging and utterly unique musical experience." (Chuck Foster - The Beat)

”The best live concert I have ever been to.”

“That was a party.” (fans)

  • If Renee Asteria was on a major label, the hype machine would've been cranked to
    author: Kyrby Raine

If Renee Asteria was on a major label, the hype machine would've been cranked to the hilt - and deservedly so. What we have here is a unique female singer/songwriter, one who trespasses beyond the basic format of acoustic strum. Instead, she liberates herself from a single, traditional formula, illuminating contemporary folk with touches of reggae, Latin pop, and jazz. Asteria has an unusual voice, but in the best way. It's down-to-Earth and ethereal at the same time, two descriptions that are supposed to the antithesis of each other. On one hand, she sings freely, her spirit cleansed of any pretensions or commercial compromises. However, there is an otherworldly quality to it. On "Curly Black Hair," her vocals feel lighter than air, as if being carried by the wind. The lyrics have a stream-of-consciousness personality, and they predictably do not always make sense. Nevertheless, there are a number of memorably poetic lines such as "You left your bag of memories on the train" from "Sweet Ben." But it's her voice that you'll be paying attention to the most. So many female vocalists these days are trying to imitate Jewel or her peers. Not Asteria. There is nothing like her on the radio at all.

  • Singer/songwriter Renee Asteria has the most exotic voice I've heard since Basia
    author: Adam Harrington

What a voice. Sometimes you have to take a step back, breathe out some air, and all yourself to be swept by the power of a spellbinding vocal. Singer/songwriter Renee Asteria (http://www.asteriarecords.com) has the most exotic voice I've heard since Basia. Guessing her ethnic origin is nearly impossible as she doesn't have a recognizable accent, at least to these ears. There is an accent there, it is thick and lush, but where it's from is unknown. And the mystery of it creates a higher level of sensuality and excitement. Asteria's vocals soar and swirl around the instrumentation, which has its basis in acoustic folk but is spiced with Latin rhythms and even reggae beats. From the first cut, "Curly Black Hair," Asteria has us in the palm of her hand, caught in the allure of her dreamy voice. A lyric sheet is provided for those who cannot understand what she's saying or are perhaps too hypnotized to comprehend the words. Personally I was too dazzled to care. "Train Song" and "Sweet Ben" are both playful and upbeat tunes where her rhythm section attempt to glide with the butterfly flight of her vocals. On the dizzyingly romantic "Mad About You," Asteria takes a jazzy tone with her singing, and it must be heard to be believed. What a voice. This is a record that melts in your heart; when Asteria turns up the heat, we are all blissfully scorched.

RENEE ASTERIA – RENEE ASTERIA: Renee Asteria is a guitarist, producer, singer and songwriter. Renee founded her own label to back "projects that integrate the arts with education, economic empowerment and raising social and environmental awareness." In addition to her solo music, Renee is a member of We'A'Dem a roots reggae band with psychedelic and world over tones. Asteria is also working on her masters in public health. This multi-talented artist writes insightful songs about the different people and places that she has experienced. Asteria's music blends a multiple of genres and the nine songs on her self-titled debut explore a range of moods and stylings. Asteria effectively fuses reflective folk-rock with reggae and Latin rhythms that are catchy and unique. Renee has a voice that is both strong and sweet. 'Curly Black Hair' starts with a serious tone and lightens instrumentally although the crux of the song is "each day is a test." It is unclear if Renee is singing the song for herself or for a socially oppressed person. 'Sweet Ben' is a love song but a sad one as "Ben is just a memory." The tempo is upbeat with snappy guitar leads as Renee's vocals soar. Renee Asteria is music that is both magical and meaningful!• Recommended Tracks: (1,3)

    author: J- Sin

Folk-rock meets Latin pop in a coalescing that is refreshingly brilliant, breathing new life into a stagnant singer/songwriter genre. Performing in the San Francisco Bay area, Renee is sure to attract a rabid fanbase as her songs are not only catchy but intelligent and delightfully performed. The rhythms have a defined Latin sense as she stokes the hearth of smoldering embers known as melodies and harmonies giving them all new coal on which to burn longer. Her lyrics are challenging and their delivery is what makes this album.

  • Renee Asteria's nine song debut CD is more like a compelling whirlwind that twis
author: Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide

It sounds a bit too much like a bland musical cliché to say that an up and coming singer/songwriter bursts into our consciousness as a breath of fresh air—so let’s amend that for the multi-talented, ethereal-voiced Renee Asteria, whose nine song debut CD is more like a compelling whirlwind that twists wildly in all sorts of emotional directions. The blend of her dreamy, lushly textured vocals and unpredictable track to track mix of jangling pop/rock, light jazz, quirky reggae (on the snappy and wistful “Oblivion”) and incisive but ultimately hopeful lyrics add rich color to a gray musical landscape. Swirling things up this way, Asteria epitomizes the bright, daring and even fun-filled spirit of being an independent artist. She can start out a song like “Cry of Ecstasy”—which chillingly chronicles the duality of love’s joy and pain--as a mournful, subdued ballad before revving up with hard rocking drum flourishes, intensifying vocals and a guitar solo which shifts from jazzy to rocking. She can juxtapose “miscellaneous thoughts” with “curly curly hair” (“Curly Black Hair”) so we can only guess what the metaphors mean. She can use “antidote” and “anecdote” in the same line and find a logical connection (the feisty pop/rocker “Mad About You”). She can be all universal and new agey one minute (“Open Mind”) yet encourages us to follow our “Animal Instinct” aggressively the next. Best of all, while she seduces us with her wide and emotional vocal range, Asteria’s lyrics keep us on our toes. Not many songwriters can make us feel joyful and optimistic, yet melancholy and nostalgic at the same time—and on the same song. She’s embarking on a bright future for herself while leaving us with, to paraphrase “Train Song,” a wonderful and thoughtful bag of memories. Just try to resist.
