notes

Who is Betty Dylan??

It's like Pink Floyd or Jethro Tull. Noone in the band is named Betty. Vickie answers to Betty since so many people call her that. It's an easy mistake to make.

Betty Dylan is Dr. Dan and Vickie. They're married. He plays guitar, sings, produces and writes a lot of the songs. Vickie plays rhythm guitar, sings, sometimes writes, oftentimes edits and ALWAYS drives. They do a lot of acoustic shows, but when they play electric, they invite the best local musicians. So, there are many, many "members" of Betty Dylan.

The name, Betty Dylan, just kinda came to them and stuck. You see, Dr. Dan's writing is sort of Bob Dylan-esque and some say he sings sorta like him, too. So, Dylan evokes that style. But Vickie's voice is so feminine that the name needed to evoke it. Betty Dylan. There you go. Simple as that.

Esteemed musicians Betty Dylan is privileged to play with from time to time include: Bernard Purdy, Jerry Jemmott, Carol Kaye, Richard Crooks, Randy Guss, Seth Pappas, Marvin Etzioni, Keith Lambeth, Lynn Davis, Eric Holden, Craig MacIntyre, Tommy McKenzie, Jesse Kanner, Baird Banner, Steve Lindsey, Stan Mitchell, Dave Kilner , Kurt Walther, David Vaught, Brian McRae, Dean Oldencott, Greg Hyatt, Larry Lerma, Michael Bannister, and many others.

IT'S EITHER THAT OR...

Dr. Dan is Bob Dylan's illegitimate transexual daughter.

OR

Betty Dylan was a desert dweller who lived at the turn of the century. She had seven daughters, all named Betty. She was an indian medicine woman who made her own instruments and whose sexuality was often questioned. Her daughters all learned her skills and spread about the globe, all bearing daughters named Betty Dylan. None of them ever took a man's name. Betty Dylan disappeared one day. The locals realized they hadn't seen her for months. Many believe she walked into the desert to die alone.

I'm just listening to "Brand New Key" that guitar of the title track is cool, I like that jazzy sound, on the other hand it's rough and rocking, grooving and the song is one of my "younger days", I remember Melanie very well.. but BD made a new song out of it. "Love Lies" comes with driving pressure, the vocals are as always great and the guitar comes to the point. I just try to imagine how that stuff sounds live. "Power Of The Obvious" slowly crawls into the tubes of my ears and there it stays, the solo is "on the point" as all of your solos Dr. Dan (!! Please give me more of that medicine, it makes me feel good and high..!!;-)))) "Turn This Thing Around" again groovy, funky, the next highlight. Dr. Dan your guitar work is far out and Vickie, you're singing is like thunder and storm, throws me up in the sky, explodes in my head and smoothes me, puts me in the pillows, makes me dreaming, it's life! I love it, I love every single note of your playing, your singing. Your music is like a drug. Hear it once, I never can stop listening, I want more and more. That's not fair. There are other artists I like, but in the moment they have to wait. Betty Dylan is in my player, in my ears, in my head, in my stomach, my body, everywhere.. "Texas Grin" Hey, Dr. Dan singing. Funny tune! Remembers me of the tunes I listened to when I was (very) young. That tune has something. I don't want to bore you, but it's always that guitar! Is there something you can't play? Well, I can't imagine.. Cool riff starting your version of that old Johnny Cash classic "Folsom Prison Blues". You do it your special way, it's that tune, but it's brand new and although, or because(?) I am a Johnny Cash fan, I love your "cover"!! It's a new song (Have I already mentioned, that Dr. Dan's guitar is amazing? Hey you rock!) "Kiss Me Back" is a lascivious seductive smooth tune, that brings hearts to fast beats an blood to boiling (no I don't mention again great guitar playing by that Doctor D.) "Sunken Heart" a folky tune sung by our beloved Doc D. who is accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. A natural campfire song. "Summer's In Sight" (yes in 3 days summer is officially starting) and this song brings it already today to my room... L.A.'s a Borin' Town" - Well I don't know L.A. (I only know N.Y.), but if L.A. is like this song, is anything but boring!! Country? Alt. Country? I hat categories for good music, and that's what it is, a great non-boring song with kind of country folk guitar playing by a guy called (have you ever heard?) Dr. Dan.... “You Can't Get Me Now" because you already have me...(lol) as a fan! It's again that classic sound of the great days when rock started to step into my life with records like "Aftermath" Keep on rockin' Betty Dylan. You bring great music, love, light and hope into my life
