notes
B.O.T., (Mike Mangan: Hammond B3 Organ, Brett McConnell: Drums, Bernie Bauer: Electric Bass), whose album was recorded and mixed entirely on analog tape, welcomes several guest musicians into the studio. Guitarist Ken Barclay, sax and flute player Mike Sirkin, and percussionist Damion Corideo, all lend their talents to several songs.
On the first track, Diva Mode, Bauer and McConnell lay down a powerful funk groove ala James Brown and Bootsy Collins. This cut features spectacular sax solos, ripping organ solos by Mangan, as well as infectious percussion.
Number 9, an energy-packed boogaloo with a few clever time signature twists, introduces some tasty guitar work, utilizes percussion, and exhibits an organ solo that explodes with a fire and tone comparable to Jimi Hendrix.
Holy Roller starts as a soulful gospel/pop tune, utilizing some classic Hammond tones and more guitar. The tune ends with a lively double-time romp that highlights a rollicking Allman Brothers-style slide guitar and organ duel.
Down and Dirty is a trio-only tune that displays a hard funk groove and some of the nastiest tones and riffs on the album.
Earthquake is a specialty track.....a minute and a half of one the craziest organ swells ever put on tape.
Organ Grinder starts with a mellow psychedelic mood while incorporating flute and percussion. The song utilizes a very creative Latin rhythm arrangement for drums, and ends with a hair-raising organ, drums, and percussion extravaganza reminiscent of early Santana.
Dim the Lights is a trio-only tune, and boasts a slow and crazy rock riff coupled with some odd time shifts and powerful Pink Floyd-esque organ and bass solos.
Showtime is an upbeat and funky trio-only cut with amazing band interplay, showcasing spectacular solos from each member and an undeniable groove.
Clown Boy is a trio-only track and features a wonderfully rickety groove, an amazing drum solo ala Elvin Jones, and some maniacal high velocity organ runs.
The last tune's name, Road Rage, speaks for itself. It offers a deep funk groove coupled with some burning bass and organ solos, a little percussion fueled spice, and more cleverly placed Latin grooves pulled off beautifully on the drums.
B.O.T.'s ability to fuse different genres produces an innovative, modern, and totally original soundscape. McConnell blasts out highly creative and energy packed grooves in various styles. Bauer emits an undeniable pocket and tone, while often taking over lead melodies and solos on the bass. Together they comprise a driving, yet refined, rhythm section that delivers an amazing live punch. Add to the mix Mangan's intensely original approach to the Hammond B3 organ and we have a band that has achieved a very difficult task: finding its own voice. Big Organ Trio helps bring the organ trio format into the new millennium by approaching it in their own way. Plainly stated, B.O.T. doesn’t sound like any other organ based band, and they are spreading excitement in the younger music fan community about the untapped capabilities of this kind of line up. Big Organ Trio released their debut album in early 2006, and for music fans, they continue to be an electrifying band to see live.

God save the B3
author: Jørgen GrydelandI came over this trio on youtube. I bought the cd right away. It is awesome. This is a "must have" album for all of you who like the sound of the B3. I hope they will come to Norway some time!
One Mo Time
author: michael odenI saw these guys in 2007 in MN. at 10KLF. I had never heard of them before I saw them that afternoon at the barn stage. I think there is a video of that afternoon performance on youtube. I listen to this CD over and over. Very groovy. They are a "must see live" band.
Good for Organ Lovers
author: Mark A. WellmanI am a big fan of bands that feature the organ: Soulive, Niacin, and now Big Organ Trio. The debut CD is quite impressive. The band is high energy, and the guest musicians are a nice touch. Buy this CD!
Here I am again!

good music!!!
author: javier morcillooh, yeahhhhhh!!! yes, this is good music,i love BIG ORGAN TRIO!!!
Good CD, There should come a live CD
author: Joop N.It is a good CD, but after 15 minutes or more its getting a little bit boring. There could be more variation in rythm, and composing or improvising on a melody. The live sound on the You Tube films is more promising than I experienced on this CD. So I hope there is coming a live CD.
F#$%in' rocks!!
author: Mike (UncleMike) HargesI agree with the previous reviewer it deserves a 6 or better. If this was a rocqumentry review it would be "But it goes to 11 you know" the original stuff is brilliant and the covers did the originals versions proud. Looking to seeing you guys live some day!!
Most Soulful Band Since The Electric Mayhem
author: Ken MontThis CD deserves six stars--incredible energy, amazing bridges--an unbelievable band! Very few players exhibit the mastery of the B3 that comes forth from this album; and the bass and drums live up to the title instrument. The solos and melodies are truly inspired--the Clapton of Hammond; the Thor of B3--I don't know how the power, soul, and sounds are produced! Intense listening pleasure from first track to last!

Five stars aren't enough-I absolutely LOVE this cd, there isn't a song on it that doesn't impress me! Phenomenal...
Rocks start to finish
author: CameronA very good album, great playing, and high energy as promised. The only thing I missed was a little more adventurous playing, but then I realized this isn't really a jazz album like you might think of MMW. It's more of an instrumental rock group... think stretched out versions of Meters tunes played by Red Hot Chili Peppers with better chops than both. After my second listen, I really got into it for what it is: a rockin' organ band with an unforgiving sound. Recommended.
At last a new Keith Emerson...
author: George KanakarisAt last a new Keith Emerson has arrived. No prog here , but funky instead. This is a great cd , and i'm waiting for more , but live!
OMFG!!!
author: angelinaThis has totally blown my mind!It is so cool to hear a young person play the B3 the way it should be played. This cd KICKS ASS!!!
Hammond at it's best !
author: Paul ChandlerI have always loved the B3, but until I discovered this CD, I had struggled to find a recording which illustrates that very unique sound so skillfully. An awesome CD and I am now spreading the word here in UK. Paul.
Big Organ Trio wins at life.
author: Allen C.Big Organ Trio shows an impressive range of musical ability in this album, from the high-energy, fast beat song Road Rage to the relaxing song, Dim The Lights. In a musical world where artists always want to cram all the lame rhymes and pious political messages into their lyrics, it's nice to see a band bold enough to do away with lyrics and focus entirely on their amazing ability to Jam.
cd is as good as their live performance
author: Kevini just saw bot a few weekends ago in vegas and had to buy there cd. the cd puts out all the energy they release in their shows. groovalicious funkadelic rock that made be dance my ass off
Best b3 I've heard in years!
author: JasonUndoubtedly the best B3 organ work I've heard in years. It's nice to see some young guys into the old type of blues, funk, rock and gospel sound. I love it! A must have for any collection!

author: MikeLThe music on the Big Organ Trio CD rocks! These guys are great musicians - hopefully, they will visit the Great Northwest soon so that we can see them live.
Funky beats with a great twist
author: AdamI recently purchased this CD and was astounded by the musical talents of the artists. They perfectly blended their music together to make a great, upbeat sound. "Down and Dirty" and "Road Rage" are both AMAZING songs, but not to outshine the rest of the superb tracks. Overall, if you're looking for fresh, upbeat tempos.... this CD's for you.
Modern jazz organ trio classic!
author: Spaghetti CakeThese guys are definitely trying to keep it fresh, not just rehash the same old funk organ trio cliches. The tunes are well written, and well played. The CD is a wild musical romp, and fun as heck to listen to for fans of the Hammond B3 organ genre or jazz/funk jam grooves.
- author: yokkes
Totally unique sound, a small dose of jazz and lots of rocking funk. This guy really rips out the heart of this wooden box. Hopefully these cats do a live recording soon. If you are a friend of the Hammond Organ this is definately for you!!
Biggest Organ Trio!!
author: GreveGreat groovin´ album....The most nasty Hammond sound I ever heard. Lean back, close your eyes and enjoy!

Completly groovy guys, I love jammin organs!
author: RayneCompletly groovy guys, I love jammin organs!
Damn good album
author: Joe ManecaBig Organ Trio is a must hear group. I have always been a big fan of instrumental music the likes of Fro and Niacin, and B.O.T. ranks up there with the best of them. They have a surprisingly "big" sound for a smaller band, and the songs deliver a free flowing kind of feel. It's a great album for those who like groove oriented music.
AWESOME
author: conradAs the band says, they sound exactly like MMW on steroids. Each track is kickin and although most people write about the great sounding hammond organ, I find the tight rhythm section and funky bass lines are what keep me listening regularly. Great stuff; if you like jazz and funk then you will not be dissapointed.
Like Nothing Else
author: DanWhat a great sound, everybody I tell about BOT falls in love. This album showcases the bands many talents and is going to be a great summer album. Listen, you wouldn't be let down!
Best organ combo since Booker T. and the M.G.'s
author: Adam RichardsThe only thing keeping this from not being 5 stars is it's not a double album, it leaves the listener wanting more... more... MORE.... MORE!!!! I don't care what your favorite kind of music is, if you like good music then you'll like this c.d. Excellent music to drive to.
This album ROCKS!
author: Funk the BandIt's only once a year that I find a new album I actually like. In 2006 that album is BOT!
ass-kicking funk/jazz/rock/jam
author: ericPut this in your cd player, turn in up LOUD and then you just try not to dance! This may be dangerous while driving. There is no funkier instrument than the hallowed B3 and nobody's tearing it up these days like BIG ORGAN TRIO!
great cd
author: Vobest cd I've heard in a while....
Outstanding CD! Could not have been more pleased!
author: Joel FIt's smokin' guys! I'm a musician myself and you've hit me where I live. Solid, tight and funky as it gets. Long live the Trio and the B3 they rode in on!!
A TRUE DESERT ISLAND DISC!!!!!!!!
author: BenRoot Down and get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Once year hear this, you'll breathe a LONG-OVERDUE sigh of relief!
author: ManuelMan, does this album cook...looks as though the sounds of the mighty Hammond B-3 haven't diminished over the years, but that's what happens when one as talented and imaginitive as Mike Mangan comes along and gives it a fresh new spin on life. With the aid of an equally talented rhythm section (comprised of bass player Bernie Bauer and drummer Brett McConnell), Mangan proceeds to rewrite the book on how to thoroughly maximize the potential of an often-overlooked addition to the keyboard family. Rock, Funk, Jazz, Blues, Latin, you name it. No genre's safe from this guy nor his "partners in crime" for that matter. Only thing keeping this from being a stellar 5-star outing was that the tracks could've been longer for the sake of stretching out the band's considerable chops. Hopefully on their next release, that wish will be granted. In the meantime, grab yourself a copy and lose yourself in a sea of smokin' hot organ grooves rarely experienced in recent times!!!
Woah.
author: Mutha F-ing JTIf you don't own this cd then you should go home to cry to yo mama kuzz you're missin out on one of the best pieces of awesomeness in history since sliced bread
By the throat
author: Bruce SThis organ guy is not human. He grabs the mighty B3 by the throat and thrashes it within an inch of it's life, in between giving it the best orgasms it ever had. That's when they're playing live. This CD captures a good deal of the live intensity of the band, and MORE of the subtle musicianship than you can hear in a club. Drums and bass as tight and classy as all get out, with chops bursting at the seams. And the bass player really LOOKS like a bass player.
Should truly be 4.5 stars
author: ErikJazzy, funky, rocking, bluesy, all at once. Truly unique and amazing. I've never heard a B3 sound quite like this. Its most definitely an experience not to be missed. Only wish it was a little bit longer, but at least it leaves you wanting more. In one word: Awesome.
ONE OF A KIND AWESOME CD
author: KimWOW. THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST. I LOVE THE OLD GROWLING HAMMOND B3. THEY REMIND ME OF AN ATLANTA GROUP FROM 1970. KEEP IT UP GUYS.
If Jimi Hendrix played a B3 . . .
author: Joe from FUZEI too have been anticipating the release of this CD and my expectations were exceeded in every way. This band has some serious attitude and there is nothing smooth jazz about it! I hear influences from all over the map and not just organ here: Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, John Medeski as well as the Jimmy Smiths. You won't hit the stop button once this disc is in your player!
Great album!
author: DieterGreat CD guys! I've been waiting for it for a few months and it was worth the wait. Thanks!
Adding to my collection of jazz and funk!
author: HarloweThe sound and ambience of this compilation are like the experience of seeing Big Organ Trio perform! I'm thrilled to pass this CD on to new fans! Very high energy driving music.
Really different approach to the B
author: Dennis WieandI've been waiting for this one for a while now, and it arrived today. After three back to back listens I had to go down and spin up my own hammond I was so inspired! As someone who owns a hammond, plays one, and tries to listen to every new player that comes out it's refreshing to see someone doing something so different on the instrument. The chops are definitely there, and the sound he gets out of that thing literally sizzles. THis one's a must have for any tonewheel fans out there.
Total adrenalin rush!
author: NealCrank up the volume and hang on tight! 41 minutes of high octane, pedal-stompin', all out of breath, Hammond smash fest! Zowie!
this CD is amazingly awesome
author: Shawnthe Organ Trio is an amazing band it is really a good cd, trust me!
The best trio I have ever heard!
author: You-in-a-bandB.O.T. Takes Fusion, Jazz, Funk, to a new level! this is a must have Cd! Buy one for the whole family!
