Studies at Berklee College of Music included Performance, Composition, Arranging and Orchestration. Performed with Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Peter Erskine, Joe Beck, Ali Ryerson, Brubeck Bros., Stephen Stills, Jay McShann, 5th Dimension, Neil Sedaka etc. Has six CD`s released( will be available here soon!) of original Jazz, Worldfusion, Latin, Funk and Orchestral styles. "Absolute Music" features many original tunes that will make you sit down and listen and also features an arrangement for solo Bass of a Thelonious Monk piece entitled "Ruby, My Dear". BD has performed on just about every type of gig immaginable from Musical Productions to Cruise ships to Club dates and Concert halls with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and is one of the "cats" in all the local scenes he has been a part of (from Boston to Chicago to Florida). Currently instructing intermediate to advanced students of the Bass as well as players of any instrument in Jazz Improvisation and Jazz Harmony/Theory. Brian has been known as a serious player for many years. His reputation as showing up to the gig ( jazz dates especially ) to " Play" and having the attitude of "Take No Prisoners" is the stuff of legends. In other words ,his approach to playing the Fender fretless/fretted bass is like the energy of a run-away freight train but with the sensitivity of an artist. His melodic approach is totally original ( loves playing standards!) and also based in traditional jazz like Bebop to Modal stylings and other musics of the world. Brian has been inspired by Bird, Coltrane, Miles, Monk, The Beatles, James Brown, Jaco, Zawinul, Wayne, Cannonball, Bartok, Ravel, Stravinsky, Debussy, Pat Martino, Jimi Hendrix, James Jamerson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Paul Chambers, Dave Holland, Charlie Haden, Ornette Coleman, Parliament Funkadelic, Cichao, Brasilian jazz etc.

Absolute mastery ... with a groove!
author: BeJae FlemingAbsolute Music is a must for anyone who loves superb playing. Brian Derek’s performance on bass is utterly stunning. The compositions on this CD are rich with a cinematic feel, sophisticated, complex, imaginative and satisfying even for a rootsy, I-don’t-quite-get-this-jazz-stuff gal like me. Absolute Music is absolute mastery … with a groove!
Brian's music is outstanding on many levels.
author: Eric ClancyBrian's music is oustanding on many levels. For one thing he brings back the power and thunder of the bass the way Jaco did, but with an even keener development of a melodic bebop approach honed to an amazing level. I have yet to hear another bass player do what he is doing here, and it really is impressive. I highly recomend his music!
