notes
"True to its name, San Francisco’s Built for the Sea crafts lush indie-rock that is at once dreamy, hypnotic, and emotionally powerful." --Kathleen Richards, East Bay Express
"There are those moments where you hear someone play music and you say, 'Holy Shit. Must record.' Terri [Winston, Women's Audio Misson] was teaching a basics recording class, when student Lia Rose opened her mouth to sing and Terri had the moment mentioned above ... It's obvious what Terri heard, Lia's voice is captivating and beautiful. The band is versatile and play well, and Terri's recording and production prove that she is more than qualified to be teaching recording. Mastered by our pal Sarah Register @ The Lodge, NYC." - LC, Tape Op Magazine, Album Review
"The San Francisco indie-rock band Built for the Sea makes a sparkling debut. The band conjures a haunting mood, reminiscent of Mazzy Star or Cowboy Junkies, but glides higher with the ethereally beautiful vocals of Lia Rose. The music finds its own mesmerizing tone. Rose's extraordinary songwriting gifts are evident in such gems as "Hypnotist" and "Move in Time." They are immediately involving, but further enthrall the listener with each subsequent play. Built for the Sea performs tonight at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco." -- Paul Freeman, Palo Alto Daily News
"San Francisco's Built For the Sea is the latest addition to my seduction playlist ... Lead singer Lia Rose's soothing voice creates a unique contrast against the powerful musical build up coming from the guitars, drums and piano behind her. The result is non-pretentious, satisfying mellow rock." --Freeindie.com
"This is without a doubt the best CD I've listened to all year. Built for the Sea has such a great quality about them. I absolutely love Lia Rose's vocals and can listen to her sing all day long. The music is mesmerizing and alluring. Do yourself a favor and check out this hot band on the rise." -- Madalyn Sklar, GoGirlsMusic.com

must have
author: robert jacksonWhen I first ran across this album and listened to the samples I knew I had to have a copy. This is a great work of music. Relaxing, dreamy, haunting --- the music stays with me and I keep going back to it. I am very pleased to have added this CD to my collection and hope BFTS will follow up soon with an equally enjoyable album.
something special
author: AllisonThere are so many things about this band that are exceptional - the arrangements, the lead singer's vocal quality, the lyrics... Each instrument seems to add the exact right thing at the perfect time. I bought this CD after seeing them live and thinking through the whole show that there are not many groups that grasp the art of song writing this completely. No matter what your taste, if you love music, you must own this album.
One of the albums you need to get!!
author: LeoIt starts with We Now Know which is a great song and then doesn't let up, it is a hauntingly good disc. I loved it and can't wait for another and that includes Lia Rose's next project Weatherkingdom.
fantastic!!
author: erinThis is an album I just can't stop listening to...the music comes from such a compassionate place and its beauty is striking to say the least. The next time I visit San Francisco it has to be when BFTS is playing!!
Thoroughly Enjoyable
author: carenThis is an excellent CD and album. Built for the Sea contains melodic music, with meaningful lyrics which flows well from song to song. The quality and depth of each track is superb. I look forward to their next release!
Mistle Thrush meets Velour 100 (both now defunct)
author: video revolutionSounds akin to two bands comprising a mix of low-fi and folk gaze styles... Mistle Thrush (formerly on the defunct Bedazzled label) and Velour 100 (Tooth and Nail records). I can't say it outshines Velour 100's brash transitions from soft to loud and sultry sounding female vocals, but I can see this CD is very cool.
Melodic Satisfaction
author: JIt seems these days that indie bands are producing well-crafted albums, many far superior to those with big name labels. Built for the Sea is no exception. From the moment I heard DIVE IN, I knew I had to pick up this album. Other favorite tracks include Hypnotist and Awake - but I believe this entire album is extremely well done. Lia Rose's voice combined with the mellow rock of her bandmates will melt your heart and calm your nerves. Cheers to B4TS.
Wow
author: Matthew AutyMy brother introduced me to this and i am very grateful not a weak track on the cd i can only hope they come to the uk,fantastic.
Excellent songs from a rising star band!
author: CodyThis is the first I'd heard of Built For the Sea, a new band out of San Fran. I caught the song 'Awake' on Live105 and searched for a week before I found out what band--I instantly bought this CD...I find the standout tracks to be Awake, Move In Time, Hypnotist and Paper Tigers in that order. My least favorite song is The Moon's View, although that song is still not bad, just out of the ten here. Lia doesn't list Dolores O'Riordan in her Myspace influences but her pipes definitely have a touch of that as mentioned--the band itself sounds vaguely Radiohead-ish on some tracks musically, though this is quite a piano heavy CD, not a bad thing, and is not hard by any means. But I have to say that I overall was pleasantly surprised by the CD and plan to attend a live show when I can. Go BFTS!
Outstanding Debut CD!
author: Matt FThese guys are fantastic! Really, not one bad track on the entire disc. Kind of a cross between Mazzy Star and Cranberries, but really even better than that. This is definitely a CD to have!
excellent!
author: mattreally good album. a couple of the tracks are beautiful. the singer has a wonderful voice (reminiscent of the Cranberries) and there are some interesting elements to the music that keep it fresh.
