notes
Singer-songwriter Suzanne Buirgy is a native Californian whose blend of folk, rock, and pop music styles make for a uniquely classic yet edgy and passionate listening experience. Described in Billboard as having a "raw from-the-gut sound," and in the Advocate as an artist who can "rock your world or break your heart," Buirgy's musical roots are deep and varied.
On her own by the age of 16, Buirgy began her career in musical theater as part of an ensemble cast in the long-running Los Angeles musical review, A 5-6-7-8 Take Two. At 18 she won a principle role in the New York Shakespeare Festival's first touring company of Pirates of Penzance and traveled extensively throughout the United States. She made her way into the rock and roll arena playing L.A. venues that included The Troubadour, the Whisky, and the Roxy as lead singer for the all-girl band, The Riveters. Ultimately, she co-wrote and starred in a musical called The Story Goes..., based on her life and songs.Touted in Billboard as an artist whose voice "hints at a live show that kicks serious butt," Buirgy brings her own unique blend of drama and edge to her performances.
Buirgy's 1998 CD, A SMALL WORD, was released to critical acclaim and features a duet with one of her musical heroes, Janis Ian. In 1999, Buirgy was a winner in the Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk Competition, an accomplishment she shares with past winners: John Gorka, Lucinda Williams, and Lyle Lovett. Buirgy's upcoming CD, The View From Here, is scheduled for a March 2001 release.
Through every phase of her career, Buirgy has written songs and ultimately hopes to reach her audience with heartfelt stories that resonate with her own personal truths. "I started to write songs for the same reason that most writers do. I needed a way to communicate my own experiences and I wanted to give a voice to others who have shared the same feelings I've had."

just a little something different
author: ken lawrencethis writer found suzanne by accident when her name was feature in a newsletter promoting a concert in metuchen NJ. for the support group women helping women. suzanne was schedule to appear with dar williams. well the concert went off well and i'm pleased at what i've found. like the follow up the view from here, suzanne shows off a rich but not pretensious voice and her music could easly find a home on tripple a radio stations like WRLT nashville, WBOS boston, WXRT chicago and KFOG in sanfransisco. if you've got this one get the view from here too. you won't be disappointed it's just a little something different to listen to so like her song says Listen!
Suzanne opens her heart.
author: Vic LindblomSuzanne is gutsy enough to bare her heart, and bring us along. You can't help but identify with her lyrics. And the style drives it home. Suzanne, thank you for a small word!
Totally AWESOME Album. BUY it NOW
author: Alan TeatherTotally awesome album. Since hearing some of the songs at the Kerrville web cast and then hearing the clips on this site I just had to have this album. Deep, afectionate lyrics and songs that mean a lot to the artist and to, I guess many listeners to the album. Mims story hits home as do many of the others. On playing this album for a friend he said it scares him and excites him both at the same time. How this album is not on general sale over here in the UK is beyond me. If this is the quality and standard of work from Suzanne then the next album will be a masterpeice as well. All I can say is BUY IT NOW !!!!!!!
Wow.
author: Larry Flick, BillboardWith "A Small Word," Suzanne Buirgy goes for a raw, from-the-gut sound that's fondly reminiscent of Melissa Etheridge and Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls. Sharing production and songwriting credits with Judy Wieder and Ken Berry (and occasionally harmonizing with pal Janis Ian), she comfortably darts from delicate piano ballads to bluesy rockers that hint at a live show that kicks serious butt. Buirgy deserves a gold star for not indulging in the kind of obtuse bedroom poetry that all-too-frequently dogs the work of her contemporaries. She shoots from the hip, and she's not shy about unleashing an ample amount of rage in her material. Cases in point: the ballsy, uptempo "Never Say Never," on which Buirgy seems to channel Janis Joplin, and "Mim's Story," a heartbreaking ode to her late mother that's guaranteed to leave the listener drained but ready for more.
Enormous Experience!
author: Jos Van Den Boom, Crossroads, Brto-radio, Holland“When I first listened to A Small World I was taken by surprise. What a delicious blend of folk, folk-rock, or whatever you want to call it. It immediately made clear to me that Suzanne Buirgy stands out from the herd as she delivers honest emotion in each and every one of these tracks: she draws up her vocals from deep down her toes. Although the album as a whole hits like a rock (especially Rock and Roll of the dice that evokes memories of Janis Joplin), some of the songs Suzanne wrote herself deserve special attention. Mim’s Story for example. It’s a beautiful ballad in memory of her mother. But perhaps most beautiful of all is Shooting Stars, a duet with one of Suzanne’s heroes: Janis Ian. I think in particular for fans of Mary Chapin Carpenter (like I am) listening to Suzanne Buirgy’s A Small World will be an enormous experience. And “Experience” happens to be the title of the forthcoming album of Suzanne. I really look out for that CD!
