notes

Cathead Dooly is a southern country/rock band from Middle Georgia, an area with a long history of musical excellence having produced such artists as The Allman Brothers, Otis Redding, Little Richard, and Stillwater to name just a few. The Cathead Dooly band specializes in music ranging from old and new country classics, Texas two-step, and Southern Rock, to original music written by Cathead Dooly band members. Their shows mix music that will have you toe tapping, slow dancing, fast dancing, laughing, and listening.

Cathead Dooly specializes in playing for such occasions as festivals, business entertainment, political events, corporate openings, fund-raisers, weddings, parties, and barbecues. Cathead Dooly tours in Britain annually and leaves for their 2004 tour in May. With a song repertoire of over 100 pieces of music they can usually tailor the play list to your event. They have even been known to write songs especially for an occasion.

Band members include:
Aubrey Ray: guitar, mandolin, banjo, and lead vocals

Brian Whitehead: flattop guitar, and lead vocals

Keith Dean: guitar, pedal-steel guitar, and vocals

Chuck Spivey: bass guitar, and vocals

Bruce Allen: drums, accessory percussion, and vocals

Francis Peed: Keyboards

On occasion the band will bring guest performers to be highlighted during shows. Performers playing with the band in the past have included Scott ("Scooter") Pallot (Vocals, guitar, harmonica), Annmarie Riley (Talent winner, TV, and recording artist from Wales),

In case you are wondering, the band name of Cathead Dooly was conceived by Aubrey Ray in about 1970, and is based on two of his favorite things...food and people. A cathead biscuit is an old Southern term for a biscuit made by rolling a piece of bread dough in your hands to about the size and shape of a cat's head; then cooking it to a golden brown. Aubrey loves cathead biscuits so much that he has even written a song called "Sopping Syrup" about them. The person connection for the band name goes back to when Aubrey was a teen-ager. There was a friend in Aubrey's small home town who had the habit of when leaving, instead of just saying "goodbye", he would wave and say, "Yours truly, Cathead Dooly". Now his name wasn't Dooly and he wasn't known as "Cathead". It's just one of those country sayings that you hear when you grow up in the South.

Last week I received one of the European advance copies of this CD. I am pleased to see it now available from CDBaby and Tower Records. It is absolutely “FAB”. I heard Cathead Dooly on tour last year in Britain and this group is outstanding! They are really changing musical tastes in the UK. Give yourself a great gift, get this CD and play it for the daily commute...your commute will take on a much better flavour.

I enjoy this CD so much that I play it everytime I'm in my car, which is a lot. I know the words to most of the songs by heart, and I enjoy singing along. My favorites are Home Cooking, Sad State of Affairs (the music in this song makes me wish that I was at the beach), and Putting On The Gold. It's a beautiful song.

  • Wow! I LOVED IT.
    author: Kay Putnal

Great original music, a little bit rock and roll, a little bit caribbean, and a whole lot country. The lyrics are funny and sad....Cathead Dooly is a GOOD TIME on CD.

  • Great CD, Original Songs and great production

I recently bought a copy of this CD whilst visiting the US and I was lucky enough to witness the band in the flesh at a concert they were performing at. The CD is great with some fantastic original songs and some great guitar and piano that really complements the production and overall sound of the CD. Being from Wales in the UK I am not a keen listener of this genre of music but I can happily say having listened to the CD I am a converted southern Country/Rock fan thanks to Cathead Dooly... I can recommend it to everyone.

  • I can't stop listening to this fantastic CD!

  • Songs are really great, guitarists awesome, and production is excellent!

I bought this CD at a recent Cathead Dooly performance. It is really great!! This CD has a great blend of country and rock. The lead guitar is incredible and the production is better than a lot of the stuff coming out of Nashville these days. My two favorite songs are All I'm Asking You to Do is Dance and The Bus. My girlfriend loves Home Cooking and she thinks the cello is awesome in Stand My Ground.

  • Great recording, Great songs!!
    author: Terry Franks
