notes

Thirteen Dreams Tribute Cd to the brilliant 60's/70's rock band Spirit is a collectors dream. This new six member Bothell / Seattle Band is astonishing! "Redux's" Producer Dave Aumann pulled out all the stops on this one!

Spirit is widely recognized as one of the quintessential sixties psychedelic bands – and their opus the beautifuly haunting “Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus” is rightly heralded as one of the real classics of the era. The genius of guitarist Randy California, vocalist Jay Ferguson, bassist Mark Andes, keyboardist John Locke and drummer Ed Cassidy fills their music with a timeless surealistic beauty. Their music lingers in your mind and soul long after you've experienced it! "Our Sardonicus is a horror movie inside a horror movie" stated the great Randy California of their grandiouse project.

Continuing with and adding to this magnificent tradition is Thirteen Dreams. Long time veterans of the psychedelic music scene. Thirteen Dreams lovingly revisits “Dr. Sardonicus" in its entirety, bringing this 1971 masterpiece into the new millennium.

“Twelve Dreams of Dr.Sardonicus: "Redux" takes the whole psychedelic experience to a new level with theremins, sitars, violins, e-bows, moog synths, and other out-of-this-world sounds, creating pure musical magic. Almost double the length of the Spirit original, “Redux” also includes mind blowing new versions of other unreleased Spirit songs. To compliment our superb band 13 Dreams, we picked the world's finest musicians living in the area at the time, for the "Redux" Production.

13 Dreams consists of one of the Northwest's best guitarist's Jeff Carolus-lead guitar/vocals. The band also includes Ed Vance-keyboards, Devan Stovall-drums, Chris Swanson-bass, Dave Aumann-guitars/vocals/theremin, Erik Hansen-vocals. Guest musicians, including Steve Fossen; formerly of Heart, film composer Saeed Shahram, Don King and Jeff Beals;from Jr. Cadillac, psychedelic violinist Seth Warren, sitarist Larry Ludvig, German vocalist Bea Kendrick, Doug Peters and Desiree Tournier.

The Great Orion Nebula Photo that graces the "Redux" Cd cover and also shows up inside the 8 page color booklet was taken by the famous astrophotographer Russell Croman.

Interesting Footnote – Doug Yule, formerly of The Velvet Underground, served as the Project Creative Consultant Director.

  • Magical !!!
    author: Tony Richardson

I have been a true blue Spirit fan since their first mind blowing album and with their unique sound was a bit unsure what to expect from the Redux album. I need not have worried, what can I say that has not already beeen said, an absolutely superb album and for any Spirit fans a must. 13 Dreams have created a truly magical rendition of Sardonicus.Well done any chance of more in the same vein?

  • Sardonicus :Redux is as interesting as the original!
    author: Darren Sherberg

Unlike most tributes or remakes, the 13 Dreams, Sardonicus: Redux is not a pale retread, but a re-examination of the material, like a new production of a good play. The bonus material is exciting and the 8 page color booklet is informative as it is lavish. The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus: is as interesting as the original!

  • Some of the songs, Animal Zoo, Street Worm and Space Child are six stars!
    author: Cal Webber

Spirit, was always in my top 5 list of favorite bands and I've never heard anyone come even near to sounding like them, but 13 Dreams has acomplished that and then some! I swear this must be Spirit, 5 stars to the tribute or remake as such, the songs, Animal Zoo, Street Worm, and Space Child are 6 stars, which to me means their even better than the original material produced in the 70's.

  • This should've been bad, but...
    author: David Eade

When I first heard the original Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit I thought it was an awful mess, but my friend insisted that I borrow it and listen again. On the third hearing I got it. It will always be my favourite album. I came across the 13 Dreams album by accident, and ordered it with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. How dare they! I wasn't sure at first, but, like the original, it has grown on me. Read the other reviews - they are so right. I would have given it five stars, but why oh why did they turn Life Has just Begun, a beautiful song, into a meandering instrumental? Otherwise, this is a fresh slant on a classic album

    author: Tim Howard

I was not expecting to much before I played Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Saerdonicus:Redux, but boy was I wrong! This Cd is should be put in the same collection as the first 4 Spirit Cd's. You could just swear that guitarist Jeff Carolus was Randy California himself playing on this tribute album. Bravo to producer Dave Aumann for putting his heart and soul into Sardonicus:Redux.

    author: John Turgusen

Great music, but beware some of this Cd could make you a little dizzy. Listening to Mr. Skin with a great set of headphones might make you hurl. My daughter loves 13 Dreams, but she said that some of it made her really tipsy. This tribute is hard to forget and they mean what they say, love, death, global warming, a very haunting experience!

  • A brilliant remake
author: Larry Torgenson / Music News

A lush textural mix of hard rock, space jazz, and mellow harmonies, a great tribute to Spirit and a impressive album in general. A brilliant remake, great extra's include a unreleased Spirit song, a neat Spirit Style Jam and a original instumental by Dave Aumann, and the best Randy California Clone I've ever heard Jeff Carolus.

  • the musicians on this project are superb, utterly gifted!
    author: Don Johnsen

13 Dreams is a band to watch out for, there are a few songs on this Cd that I feel are better than the orignal material, although Spirit is one of my favorite all time bands the musicians on this project are superb, utterly gifted! author: Tom Jenkins

Being a Spirit Fan, I was figuring this might be just a ok tribute Cd to this great 60"s group, boy was I wrong, through the tribute it just keeps getting better. Twelve Dreams Of Dr.Sardonicus:Redux cooks, the lead guitarist sounds a lot like Randy California. It's so good I just wish it were longer! it's almost 70 minutes of music, but I wanted it to never end.

  • Mindblowing music, I'm curious, what planet are these guys 13 Dreams from
author: David Ryan, Stereo Club International.

At times lush and cosmic, sometimes serious and apocalyptic, this Spirit tribute is respectful yet inventive, a large scale project that is simply wonderful! Mindblowing music, I'm curious what planet are these guys 13 Dreams from?

    author: Won Taka

What a wonderful Cd all the songs are great! 13 Dreams is a remarkable band! My favorite is the instrumental Space Child, that's worth the price of the Cd alone! This is a great album!!!!!!
