Exactly What Made KISS Great
author: James Sibley
Recently, I got the chance to listen to one of the best KISS albums from their greatest decade; the seventies. The strange thing about it was that neither Gene, Paul, Ace nor Peter apparently had anything to do with it nor does this mean it was some forgotten mix of Vinnie, Eric, Mark or any of the other cast of characters who share The Hottest Band in The World listing on their résumés.
From what I can tell the band is 1977 and the album is simply titled Rock ‘N Roll. I say this because finding out whom exactly 1977 is, seems to be as much of a mystery as the original KISS rode to Super Stardom. The website and the MySpace (where I originally found them) both put the music first and foremost and I am apparently behind the train on this one, because a legion of fans have already signed up and downloaded the album and the singles, rocketing 1977 to one of the top spots on the MySpace Music Top 100 Artists chart.
With songs like Gladiator, Do Ya Know What I Want and Rock ‘N Roll, 1977 has captured exactly what they obviously set out to achieve. From the first power chord to the last Gene Simmons-esque vocal track, you’d swear it was a basement tape of the Demon, Starchild, Space Ace and Catman. The recording itself has that gritty Mötley Crüe, Too Fast For Love feel to it.
I heard someone say once that Poison (the band) is what would happen if you took Van Halen and turned it up, in all the wrong directions. If that’s true, the folks at A. Coin Management and 1977 have grabbed hold of exactly what made KISS great and I hope they never let it go.

Fantastic release! 1977 captures the spirit of 1970s-era KISS with all-original, yet familiar-sounding material. This is a great tribute to 'The Best' that proves 1977 ain't too shabby themselves!
Any KISS fan should have a blast listening to this album, "I think you know what I'm talking about..."
Highly recommended.
